Tried re-loading the software that came with the Mobo, but the install hangs.
Loaded driver file from MG and installed, same prob.

    Card is a RealTek AC97 6-channel

Cannot stop device via XP; same prob; computer hangs when I try to uninstall and reinstall.

Just did a "clean" install of XP Pro; partitioned my HD, Installed windows updates and SP2. Audio card worked before but OS was corrupt, hence the reinstall.

    Thoughts are appreciated

Are you sure this is realtek AC97 and not realtek HD?

    What motherboard is this?

    theefool-

It's an AC 97. Mobo is an ECS 865PE-A 1.2

When I look at sound devices in control panel, there is no default device, nor am I given the option to select one. I located the AC 97 folder on the Mobo software and installed it that way-according to XP, my sound card is working.

However, it isn't set up as the default, and the volume control is missing on my quick launch panel (actually hasn't been there since the install). In fact, I can't set up a default sound device; the button is grayed out.

I've downloaded the updated drivers for this card but Windows still isn't seeing it. Troubleshooter was no help either (meaning the suggestions in there didn't work.)

For some reason, this system doesn't think that there's a sound card installed, even though it knows that the one on the mobo is operational (before, the driver was corrupt but I solved that prob.)

Sorry if my post is redundant and silly, I've been at this for better than 12 hours and I'm about ready for a beer.

Try uninstalling all the devices within device manager.

    Namely the ones under:

    "Sounds, Video, Game Controllers"

    Then reboot.

    That did it!

Actually, I didn't have to reinstall; I just uninstalled AC97, shut down Windows, logged back on, and it was up and running.

Working fine now! Thanks for the help.
