Sorry to be such a pain, but I recently got a new computer and I'm working out all the kinks. I used to be able to burn all my music on a CD, but now they seem to be either in WMA or DRM, which I assume is some kind of coded file? At any rate, I'm trying to find a good software program that will convert those files to MP3 so I can burn them on to a blank CD. I don't care if I have to pay and how much I have to pay, but I love my music CD's, so could anyone direct me to a program that could convert these files?

    Again, thanks in advance!

I know, but this is a different thread. I'm now looking to convert DRM to MP3........or WMA to MP3. Is this even possible?

I don't have an answer but am curious about the exact situation. Years ago, I took all my CDs and tried to copy all the "one hit wonders" to my computer. At the time, with small HDs, copying them to WMA format seemed like a good idea to save space. When my computer crashed and I had to reinstall the OS (either win98 or XP) all my WMA files were inaccessible because of the rights management. 48hrs. (and I mean a complete weekend project) of copying and converting was lost. There were no workarounds back then that I found. I vowed to never use WMA or any Microsoft format again.

Since then I have never had a problem with accessing my saved Mp3s on new OS. Can you explain how the music files were originally created or if they were ever in MP3 format?

Which OS is your new computer? Are you getting the WMA or DRM file extension from the actual file name (ie. mysong.drm or mysong.wma) or is from right-clicking the file and selecting Properties?

I haven't seen this problem in a while and just want to understand what is going on. Thanks!

    Thanks for the reply, Sach.

OS is Windows 7 and I get the .wma file extension when clicking on properties.

The files that I currently have are in .wma format and I would like to convert them to mp3. Any possibility??

I''m not sure on converting them. They seem to be authentic wma files (which I hate!).

Where did they come from--were they downloaded or created by you?
How have they been transferred to your new computer--Have you connected the old HD to the new computer?
How old are the files? My problems happened around 2000-2002, are the files that old?

Most importantly, do you have access to the original computer they were created on? If that computer still works the converting them to MP3 should be doable. I'd have to look into finding a fix if that computer isn't working. (I'm not hopeful because I know I gave up on it when it happened to me.) But that was several years ago, so I don't know if anyone has figured it out yet. It still makes me mad that I wasn't warned that the files were keyed to the computer I converted them to WMA on. If I had known I would have converted them to something else, but I'm not sure Mp3 was even an option back then. I think it was .Wav or .WMA, and the wave files were about 7 times larger.

Paid converters for DRM listed in post #2 in this thread

In XP, I use freeRIP http://majorgeeks.com/FreeRIP_d5653.html for my CDs.
I put in the music CD, right click and select rip with FreeRIP. It shows me all the tracks on the CD and allows me to select which ones I want mp3s of. Then I put the mp3s on my mp3 player.
I don't have an optical drive on my Win 7 netbook so it isn't soemthing I'd do on that computer.

Will this work for downloaded tracks? I'm just trying to burn my downloaded tracks onto disc. There was no need for me to save mp3's from my old computer because I put everything on CD. I know it's old school, but that's just me. :-D
