Audio driver corrupted?

Hi,

I have an HP Pavilion desktop Model p6213w. I believe my problems stem from trying to install an old webcam (Logitech Pro) that was meant for XP, not Windows 7. I never got it to work and a couple of days later I noticed I had no sound (not sure exactly when sound disappeared!).

I spent 5 hours in HP chat (odd that they tried to help since my PC is over a year old) where they kept trying to reinstall the Realtek driver. Finally the tech told me I should restore, but for some reason there was no restore point set (now I do have, but too late!). Then he said I should backup my files because I should just do a factory reset or whatever it's called. Well then my Passport would not work on the USB (the Passport DOES work on my laptop)! At this point I had to give up (when I tried calling support they then said my warranty is expired).

I then found out the computer could not detect the scanner of my All-in-One Printer! Although I confirmed the scanner does work, the computer can only work the printer, not the scanner. (Again, not sure when this problem began since I hadn't used the scanner for a couple of weeks).

Can these problems be related and all caused by that old webcam incident? Windows says "driver may be corrupt".

Today I tried again to remove the sound devices, uninstall whatever drivers I see in Sound, re-install the Realtek driver, etc. Nothing works.

Everytime I did the above, after I restart, I see the same sound devices listed again such as "Microsoft trusted audio driver," etc. along with the Realtek.

I would certainly appreciate some help. Thanks

Greetings, KauaiSis, and welcome to MajorGeeks.

For some reason, I am not seeing your model number (Pavilion p6213w) on this page - please correct me if I'm wrong.

If you press Ctrl+Alt+S you should be presented with the HP Support Information window - is the model # the same there?

And, to verify: you're running Windows 7? If so, is it at Service Pack 1?

Hi Caliban!

Here is the info (I omitted serial number)

How do I check regarding Service Pack ? It says Windows7 Home Premium Version 6.1 (Build 7600)

Model #: p6213w
Product #: NY639AA-ABA
Software Build #: 94NAv6PrA3
Service ID #: 120-909
PCBRAND: Pavilion

Thanks!

Good morning.

Agreed with falconattack: are there any flags in Device Manager?

Any Service Pack information should be displayed by on the System Properties page (Control Panel > System).

I'm still not seeing your model at the HP site, but no worries - we'll figure that out. Meanwhile, please do the following:

Download and run Speccy, a free system information tool.

When the scan completes, click 'File', 'Save as Text file', name the report, and save to an easily found location, such as your Desktop.

Be advised: the report will display your IP Address and Windows Product Key. You may delete this information if you so wish.

Then attach that file to your next post per these instructions: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post.

1) I have yellow exclamation marks on:
• MS Streaming Clock Proxy
• MS Stream Quality Manager Proxy
• MS Stream Svc Proxy
• MS Stream Tee/Sink-Sink Converter
• MS Stream Tee/Sink-Sink Converter
• MS Trusted Audio Drivers
• Realtek High Definition Audio

I have d/l the Realtek driver, uninstalled all the above then reinstalled Realtek multiple times and keep getting that other stuff back.

When I turn on my printer I also get an exclamation mark because of the scanner issue.

2) I have a 64-bit Windows 7

3) In Control Panel/System and Security I can't find mention of Service Pack or Properties. I clicked thru everything that looked related (System, Windows Update, etc.) . Windows edition says Windows 7 Home Premium.

I'll be right back after doing the Speccy. Thank you very much!

Here's the report...I couldn't find reference to Product ID Key anywhere (hope I didn't overlook it, but I used the "find" various ways and couldn't find it).
I did remove serial number, though.

After looking in your speccy report I have noticed that you actualy do have an infection running on your machine ' MyWebSearch ' this will not be causing your issue with the sound but still needs to be removed, i would suggest using Malwarebytes (free)......

http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free

run ' Perform a Quick Scan ' and this will remove this malware. It may be a good idea also to run through the the malware removal steps here.....

Good MWS catch, iain.t. ;)

KSis, I'm not seeing anything obvious to point to concerning your audio problems. When you've finished the malware cleaning procedures, you might try the MS Audio Fix it just to see if that changes anything.

Frankly, though, I'd suggest thoroughly clearing out all of the audio and webcam software and starting from scratch, if possible. If you decide to take this route, we can help walk you through it.

Hi Caliban,

I clicked on that MS Audio Fix It link and got a blank page with the warning about downloading files. I clicked on allow download, but nothing happened. I then did a google search for MS Audio Fix It and found

http://download.microsoft.com/downl...-B544-F76B9B1247BD/Mats_Run.AudioPlayback.exe

Is this the same thing? Anyway, I ran this and it didn't offer anything new I haven't tried ("reinstall Realtek driver"). I've already done this a hundred times. (Right now in Device Manager I see only the Realtek (the other Microsoft stuff is gone) but it has the exclamation point.)

I think I should go on to your next step.

Hi iain.t

Yes I tried that more than once. Doesn't work. I even went to the Realtek site to get the driver. That won't work either.

I keep getting a message that there's a problem with the Realtek driver.
Keep in mind when I chatted w/ HP support, they kept giving me the driver also. I've installed/uninstalled/installed probably 20 times by now if not more.

Any alternatives?

Thank you!

Good morning.

And we'll probably ask you to uninstall/reinstall a few more times, so bear with us. ;)

Please do this:

1. Download and install Driver Sweeper, but don't run the program yet.

2. Boot into Safe Mode.

3. Run Driver Sweeper (select the RealTek audio, click Analyze, click Clean [run Clean twice to clear up any residual leftovers]).

4. Reboot into Normal Mode and reinstall the RealTek driver.

5. Reboot again, and see if your symptoms have changed.

Let us know the results.

I thought I posted this reply but apparently not?

Anyway, I did the procedures below and still the same.

In fact, I first did it and installed the Realtek driver I got from their site (Vista_Win7_R260). [I did the Driver Sweep, then in normal mode I ran the Realtek. It first uninstalled the driver, then it restarted the computer to install. When it was restarting, Windows update was trying to search and install THEIR drivers so I clicked to stop it. Realtek then installed its driver.]

Since nothing changed after that procedure, I tried the whole process again (including the Driver Sweeper) and this time I used the HP driver from the page Caliban posted earlier. That did no better.

Which is the correct driver? The one on the HP site has other stuff such as MS Streaming Clock Proxy, etc. (6 Microsoft items plus the Realtek). The driver from Realtek is only the Realtek driver.

Next step?

Thank you very much for your help and patience.

This is turning out to be a problem child, yes?

I don't know anything about the 'MS Stream' entries, but the fact that they're loading with the HP package must mean they're important and/or necessary. However, I'm leaning towards using the solitary RealTek driver until we can get this thing worked out. Could be wrong, but it seems like the less variables we have to work with, the better.

Do you have the capacity to burn CDs/DVDs? And, are you familiar with .iso (image) burning procedures?

Hi again... I do have a burner on here, but not familiar w/ ISO image.

Caliban I don't need no steenkin' title!

I'm curious - what happens if you uninstall the RealTek driver, reboot, and let Windows try to load its generic sound drivers? Windows 7 supports a vast amount of hardware, and as the AC97 is nothing special Windows should pick it right up.

Also, how do you know you don't have sound? Is there any kind of indication (volume control, mixers, etc.) in the taskbar? Have you tried headphones?

And, have you checked the Windows Audio service to make sure it's up and running? Are there any other indications in Device Manager?

You stated earlier that you have problems with a USB device - is this still the case? Same with the printer/scanner issue?

Apologies for all of the seemingly random questions. Not trying to be facetious - just trying to get a handle on what's going on.

Don't worry about all the questions, it shows you're thinking! Keep in mind this mess all seemed to begin after I tried installing that old Logitech webcam (which I couldn't).

1) I did try letting Windows install its own drivers, didn't work.

2)The speaker icon on the taskbar has a red X. When I click on troubleshoot and do what they say, it doesn't fix it. It says "Realtek High Definition Audio has a driver problem Not fixed"

3) Can't test headphones because if I click on say, a music file, it opens the file then says Windows can't play this because there's a problem with your sound device.."

4) Yes scanner still not detected although it does work when I use the machine to make copies. Printer IS detected. (I believe I tried reinstalling, but wasn't successful--didn't spend a whole lot of time on this issue yet).

5) I'm not able to test my Passport right now, but I suspect the problem is still there where the Passport wouldn't connect (altho it did work on my other computer), yet if I plug my digital camera or a flashdrive into the same USB port, they both connect and work.

6) What is Windows Audio Service? When I go to Device manager, the only flags are in the Sound (see below for that list of drivers--7 in all)

I'm rushing off and will be back tonight. Keep asking questions, I don't mind. It shows good detective work!

Hi,
to see if your windows audio is started and set to auto please go to ....

Start > Control Panel > Admin Tools > Services > scroll down to windows Audio and check that Audio is started and set to auto ...

http://[IMG]http://img23.imageshack.us/img23/8003/srv1h.png[/IMG]

Have you got install discs for your machine ?? as a fresh install may be the only way forward in resolving the many issues you have, or uninstall everything that is giving you issues and start over again starting with the audio then others one at a time.

Have you still got the drivers and software installed for your camera and printer?? I think we may need to remove these completely from your system and try installing one at a time starting with the audio.
Remove the camera/printer and audio through add/remove programs or you can download and install Revo....

http://majorgeeks.com/Revo_Uninstaller_d5706.html

this is an excellent utility and i use it to remove problamatic programs as it removes entry's in the registry and sub folders. After removal procedure shut down and restart your machine.
Audio driver here...

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...3&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&sw_lang=&product=4006023

install this first and see if this works.

if you can give me the make and model of you printer and camera i will search to see if i can find any compatable drivers for your system.

I did the Revo and removed the Realtek. Then when I rebooted, the computer automatically installed Realtek and those six other Microsoft things (see below, eg. "streaming tee, sink to sink"; trusted audio drivers, etc.).

I then went to "view advanced system settings" and in Device Installation Settings, selected "Never install driver software from Windows Update". (How else can I prevent Windows from automatically installing the driver so that I can install the one from HP???)

I again uninstalled Realtek using the Revo and the other MS stuff using Device Manager (I don't know how else to uninstall those 6 components).

Again I restarted and AGAIN Windows automatically installed drivers!!! Arrrgh!

So again, how do I prevent this auto installation?

BTW I have an all-in-one printer/scanner HP C3150... the old Logitech webcam that started this mess is already uninstalled (as far as I know, anyway).

Thanks again

I tried once again uninstalling, etc. and this time when I rebooted, it immediately said "installing driver unsuccessful" (meaning the auto install was unsuccessful). I then installed the driver I had downloaded from the HP link. Again rebooted.... but as usual, no change, still have the red X on the speaker icon.

When I checked Device Mgr, it only shows the Realtek driver, none of those 6 MS components. The Realtek driver still shows the flag.

I did uninstall the HP Photosmart using the Control Panel uninstall.

Hi...

Again, how do I prevent Windows from automatically installing a driver when I restart after uninstalling a driver? OR do I uninstall and then reinstall without restarting?

I tried the "original" version and no change.

Thanks!

To prevent windows from auto installing generic drivers do this fix.....

Go to Start-> Search type in gpedit.msc , press enter, once local group policy editor is open navigate to ....
Computer Configuration->Administrative Templates->System->Driver Installation. Now from the right sidebar open the key named "Turn off Windows Update Device Driver Search Prompt" and select Enabled and click OK. Now Restart your computer or Log Off and then sign back in. That’s it. Now Windows wont bother you any more. Enjoy!

Note: This will not disable the Windows Update, it will only stop prompting you to update the device driver using Windows Update. You will still be able to update the driver by manually going to Windows Update.

I don't have that in Windows 7 Home, unfortunately. (I just spent some time googling and found that out).

Maybe I should do a factory reset or whatever. No? I'm so disgusted with this problem. Unless you or Caliban has any other suggestions? Very sad.

Good morning.

Try clicking Start, right-click Computer, click Properties > Advanced system settings > Hardware > Device Installation Settings, select "No, let me choose what to do" and Save changes.

I've got a feeling, though, that this isn't going to solve your problems.

Personally, if it were my machine, I'd transfer all important data and follow one or more of the following options:

1. Download, burn, and boot to a Linux distro to confirm that there is indeed good hardware sound available.

2. Consider installing a PCI sound card.

3. Perform the factory reset.

If you have recovery/install discs I would go for a clean install as this will wipe away all the issues you are having, back up all of the data/files that you need and save them to external hdd/disc or flash drive.

Hi Caliban and Iain.t!

I finally did a factory reset and have my sound back. OMG I'm deliriously happy and should've done it sooner. I guess I had to get to the point where the thought of reinstalling my files/programs was more welcome than having no sound and restarting 100 times. *LOL* :-D

Thank you very very much for your help. Just the fact that you kept trying means a lot to me because I had posted in several other places (no help, almost 0 replies!!!) before finding this site.
