audio driver for adi1981a

Hi,

I just recently re-installed windows xp home edition on my friends pc and when she tries to listen to music she get's the message "no device found". I looked up her manual on the dell website and it stated it had adi 1981a for audio. She has a dell desktop 4500. I've been looking all over the place and can't find the audio chipset driver that I believe I need. I found a white sticker on the back of the tower with the following: 05D481..........I'm not sure what this 6 character code stands for or if it can help me find the required driver. Any feedback to point me in the right direction would be very much appreciated! it's a desktop dimension 4500 series. when i look up audio driver for this model on dell web site it is listing three drivers:
Analog Devices ADI 198x Integrated Audio, Creative Labs Sound Blaster Live! 512V, and Voyetra Turtle Beach Santa Cruz.

how do i know which one will fix it? just take a stab at installing 1 at a time?

 

If you go to Dell, using your daughter's PC, and click the Drivers and Downloads link, you will get an option to enter a service tag. Next to that option is a link: Find My Service Tag.
That will help you determine what was in that PC, when it was shipped.

If it came with the stock Dell Hardware, the sound would be the Analog Devices ADI 198x Integrated Audio

I suggest that you install the chipset driver, before installing the audio.

ok, first, install Intel Chipset Software Installation Utility, and then install Analog Devices ADI 198x Integrated Audio. I'll give it a whirl.......

 

when trying to install those, i'm getting ikernel.exe couldnt be installed. any ideas?

 

First, give this a try:
Go to Start>Run and type services.msc
Find DCOM Server Process Launcher. Open its properties and set it to start. Also set it to run automatically. Now try installing.

If that doesn't work, download Dial-A-Fix
Then, run the Windows Installer fix there.
