Sorry Guys, don't know if this should be in Drivers or Hardware.

I have a 2 year old HP Pavillion that has worked just fine. Last week my sound stopped working. The HP came installed with the Sound Blaster Audigy 2 - Model # 0240 card. I know the speakers are set up properly since when I try to calibrate through Creative it plays those sounds but no other sounds through the computer. The Creative diagnostic tests finds the hardward but it fails the Midi, Wave and something else that I can't remember.
In Device Manager there is a yellow exclamation point before Sound Blaster 16 or AWE32. Under properties it says: This device cannot start. (Code 10). Under Resources it says: Resource Setting: This device isn't using any resources because it has a problem. That much I figured out....LOL. In control panel under System Sounds it says no audio device found. So it doesn't even highlight anything for you to change, such as volume etc.

I am not a computer expert but I'm pretty good at troubleshooting and nothing so far has worked. I tried removing and reinserting the sound card but to no avail. Howver, the are two wires in the front of the card...one into AUX and the other port I cannot see what it is for and they combine into one wire but that wire is not plugged into the tower at all. Should it be? Is it possible it somehow became detached and that's why it no longer works? I can't find anything in the tower that would match where it should be plugged into.
Could the card just be blown? I also tried a different slot when I took it out, also didn't work. I also disabled onboard audio in Bios. I have removed the drivers and reinstalled the drivers.

In device manager it lists the following: Audio Codecs, Creative Audigy 2, Legacy Audio Drivers, Legacy Video Capture Devices, Media Control Devices, Sound Blaster 16 and Video Codecs. That's all that's listed under sounds.

I have not installed any new hardware or software, however, my 13 year old son uses this computer and who knows what he's done.

If I have to, I will do a system restore but if there is a conflict or if the card is blown, that won't help, will it?

Can anyone help me? I tried Creative/Sound Blaster forums directly but they don't seem to know too much. You guys ALWAYS help me out.

    Thanks so much!!
    Lisa

look under device manager then codecs for (wdm) which is combo codec, if the device is having a problem remove the driver, if legacy audio is having a problem remove that too and if you have any other audio codec with a problem remove them, now reboot , if windows xp and you restart upon restarting windows will try to find the drivers and replace them, if it does and is sucessful recheck that there are no problems in device manager if there are try downloading the original driver from hp.com under support and put in your model number or serial to go to your computers support page read up on the audio device you have while there too, maybe someone with same tower has same problems or had same. the aux line your talking about comes from a cdrom or dvd drive and is a loop back to device which lets you plug in headphones into the cdrom if you are listening to a music cd and or playing an autorunning game from that drive, such as K-3 grade schools have childern play interactive games through a cdrom drive and want to use headphones or a line out from that drive it is not necessary and if you do not use the drive in this manner you do not have to install that wire to drive and sound card.

if after you try the above and get nowhere go to local computer shop and ask for a used working sound card, they should have stacks of creative pci sound cards they have pulled from dead machines. and while there have them locate the drivers, unless of course you want to buy new. before installing remove all the audio drivers from last card, then pop in the used card in a different pci slot than old one. its possible that if your son had been working in the computer and pushed in the card with power on he may have burnt both the pci slot and card.

I'm also using a Sound Blaster Audigy 2. The only wires that I can think of that run from the soundcard on mine connect the soundcard to the digital output on my CD drive. Could this be the one you have?

You should be able to find a copy of the product documentation here -

    Hope this helps.

Error code 10 is usually driver related. Try installing the sound card drivers again.
