Audio driver problem with dell vostro 1000

I am Helping a friend with her dell vostro 1000 notebook which had vista home basic installed from the manufacturer, needless to say she hated it and I have been trying to avoid vista altogether but i got a crash course. After trying to fix the auto updating problem with vista we decided to reformat with XP sp3 pro. Went to dell website and got all drivers. No audio. Driver will no install or uninstall. Computer works great now faster than before of course. But I would like to get the audio working. any ideas. I looked at dell website for audio drivers and they only offer one download and it is the same weather your running XP or Vista. I installed the chipset and that worked fine. Also when I updated the computer the one update that wont install is the audio driver. I am sure this is an easy fix but I am only a newer geek. still have alot to learn.

Try downloading and installing KB888111 which is the Microsoft Unified Audio Architecture update for hi-def audio drivers. It may not be compatible with SP3, so you may need to follow musksnipe's steps in this thread to 'trick' your PC into thinking that SP2 is installed temporarily....

Hey guys. I tried excactly what you said and still no luck. I even went to windows update and custom and tried to load the driver update again and no luck. I talked to my friend who has the disk of XPSP3 that i used to install and he has it installed on his mac. He also said he has no sound. Perhaps the os disk has a glitch for this one thing. I did download the 888111 file and it took. but when i went to update the driver it kicks me back Device installer error could not load the installer for MEDIA. Contact hardware vendor for assistance. I know the hardware is fine cause sound worked with VISTA. I am goint to switch everything back to sp 3 so when she uses the computer she doesnt download sp3 again. let me know what you come up with...
