audio issues with HP a1410n pc

Audio failed on my pc (windows xp). I installed a new audio card and cannot get it to work properly.

I ran an everest report. I've attached the report in txt and html format

within device manager the new sound card's drivers all are installed. I get a wierd message for the status: "Driver has been enabled but has not been started"

before i installed the audio card i:

1) removed all drivers for the realtek (original onboard sound card)
2) removed all software files related to audio in the add/remove section of windows
3) disabled the onboard audio support in the BIOS

now I can no audio, and cannot even select an audio device within windows audio.

Any suggestions of what I can try next?

Look in control panel > Sound. Is the card listed in there?

If your card is CMI8738/C3DX I'm reading lots of threads that people can't get sound in XP.
The card is from 2002 and I was able to find two drivers here

but I'm not sure that will solve the "driver is enabled but not started" error you see. Someone said that something in windows services keeps stopping the card.
