    Ok so i had malware problems and then did the read and run instructions on the malware forum. It seemed that everything was fine until the next day when i booted up and started to play a game then my computer froze and crashed. When i rebooted it there was no operating sound nor any other audio. I have checked to make sure my cables are plugged in and i am not muted. My sound doesnt play thru headphones nor my speakers. I have tried restarting and restoring and no luck yet would appreciate any help. Thanks

    There is no info in your chipset section. I am guessing that the driver corrupted.
    Here is the nVidia chipset driver for yor model from Dell:
    nVidia_SMBus_A02_R132919.exe

    After installing that, go to Control Panel>Sounds and Audio>Sound tab and check to see if Sigmatel is in the list for Default Playback Device. If it is make sure it is set as default.

    If your sound still isn't working, install this driver:
    SIGMATEL STAC 92XX C-Major HD Audio

    What does your Device Manager show?
    For XP: Go to Start>Control Panel> System. On the Hardware tab, click Device Manager, then click the plus sign in front of Sound, Video, Game Controllers.
    In Device Manager, if there is a ? in front of your audio device, that means no audio driver is installed.
    A ! means driver installation attempted but with problems.

    Did you do this?
    It looks like your modem is taking over as your audio device.

    Also if this is any help today i recently received this message from Diskeeper Lite
    Diskeeper has determined that your system's fragmentation level has accumulated to a point where it is degrading system performance on volume(s) C . Unhandled, fragmentation becomes the underlying cause of many reliability and uptime problems including: blue screens, crashes, software confilcts, data corruption, long backups - and more.
    You should run Diskeeper Lite now to restore your system's performance. To automate this process and maintain consistent reliability and uptime, buy Diskeeper full version now.

    To defragment your system manually, close this window and run Diskeeper Lite.
    C drive information
    Volume C has 24930 excess fragments
    In the past 2 days, the number of fragments has increased by 11029
    I think im gonna run the defrag should i?

    Yes, defrag. That always is a good idea to do at least once a month.

    Do you happen to have the volume icon on your task bar? If not you need to check the box in Sounds and Audio, under the volume tab. Also, make sure that none of volumes are muted in the Master Volume Control.

    Check to make sure that Sigmatel is enabled in Device Manager. Right click>Properties>Driver Tab.
    You might also, try disabling the Modem in Device Manager and see if that gives your sound back.

    ok so i did as instructed and disabled the unimodem half duplex and still no sound also sigmatel is enabled :( So i am just waiting on the defrag to see if it restores my sound but ill keep u informed and thanks.
    Oh on this note i defragged after i had removed my maleware which was like a day before my first post here and incase this provides insight i have determined that my microphone doesnt work either.

    Do a shut down and reboot to see if windows picks up Sigmatel.

    This is totally strange. The driver is installed, nothing is muted, no conflicts in Device Manager.
    I missed this:
    Check that Windows Audio Service is started.
    Go to Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Services
    Scroll down the list of services until you find the Windows Audio service.
    Right click on it and choose Properties.
    Make sure it is set to Automatic and Start is checked.

    Some were along the way, something is not configured right. Go through this Read Me and see if it helps. Missing XP Sound Read Me
    Also, while checking things, make sure that SPDIF or Digital is not chosen in your options.

    Ypur problem is a bit different than others that I have suggested this fix to, but if you haven't found the answer in the Read Me above, give this a try:

    Scenario One
    You DO have "Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator" listed under System Devices

    Carry out the following steps;
    * Copy C:\WINDOWS\inf\machine.inf to a temporary location
    * Edit your copy of machine.inf in Notepad
    * Remove line 20 (ExcludeFromSelect=*)
    * Right-click “Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator” and click “Update Driver”
    * Choose “Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)” and click Next
    * Choose “Don’t search. I will choose the driver to install” and click Next
    * Click “Have Disk”
    * Browse to the location of your copy of machine.inf and click OK
    * Select “Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator” and click Next
    * Wait for the software to install then click Finish

    Scenario Two
    You DON’T have "Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator" listed under System Devices

    Carry out the following steps;
    * Copy C:\WINDOWS\inf\machine.inf to a temporary location
    * Edit your copy of machine.inf in Notepad
    * Remove line 20 (ExcludeFromSelect=*)
    * Go to the Control Panel and run “Add Hardware”
    * When the Add Hardware Wizard appears, click Next
    * Wait for it to search for new hardware
    * Choose Yes, I have already connected the hardware and click Next
    * Scroll all the way down and select “Add a new hardware device”, click Next
    * Choose “Install the hardware that I manually select from a list (Advanced)”, click Next
    * Select “Show All Devices” and click Next
    * Click “Have Disk”
    * Browse to the location of your copy of machine.inf and click OK
    * Under Model, select “Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator”, click Next
    * To start installing the drivers, click Next
    * Wait for the software to install then click Finish

    You shouldn't be fragmenting this quickly. Something is not right there.
    Why don't you post a new thread in Software or maybe Hardware, detailing your too often cue to defragment. You may have a problem with your hard drive
