Hey :) I needed some help and from the looks of things this seems to be the place to find it.
I'm not sure what info you need from me but I'll lay out the problem as best as I can.
I have a Dell Inspiron E1705. I had a tech reinstall XP (OEM) on it.
I was in a rush so I asked him to just install XP and put the necessary audio/video/& internet drivers on it. I went to the Dell website and installed all the other drivers that were urgent and a couple of recommended ones.
I don't know if I installed the right drivers but my audio & video are choppy now. I went to device manager and tried to update drivers but no luck.
I have EVEREST so if any info is needed I can get it easily.
On top of all this I need to defrag my computer virtually every other day and it's running extremely slow n choppy
Thank you for your time. Peace

I installed the game "Spore" and was playing it for awhile (8 hours straight almost) with no problems. I had "Firefox" running in the background while I was playing. I would "alt-tab" when I wanted to take a break from the game and browse the net. As I was playing the game I heard a "beep" come from my laptop (not from the speakers which are connected to the headphone out). I assumed it was an alarm because I had been playing it for so long and I hadn't shut off my computer in a couple of days. I continued to play but when the game became choppy and I heard the "beep" again I stopped playing.
Since this I've defragged which I stopped at 57% because it was taking too long and my computer seemed to be lagging. I also ran CCleaner.

I've tried to play music & video online or using Media Player but I still have the problem. This has all happened within 5 hours of this posting.
Any help or suggestions would be great. I'm a dj so I really need some help cause I do use my computer frequently.
Thank you again for your time.

    Hi

Make sure you install the Intel chipset drivers first from Dell here and then install the Video drivers next again, BUT will need to know what actual video card your laptop has as that model came with a few? Everest under Summary > Display shoudl tell us this, only need the display section of an Everest log and not a full log as most is irrelevent data.

Do you have any yellow ! marks in Device manager if so what devices are they by?

PC may lag at times when defragging, which is why really do this overnight when you are not using it, stopping the defrag will have left your PC in a half finished state so the fragmentation maybe worse as files moved maybe in multiple parts as the defrag was not finished, yes I know we can get impatient while waiting for these things to happen but at times we need to wait to get best results.

Thank you for the quick response.

The video driver seems to be ok but these are the properties.

    [ NVIDIA GeForce Go 7800 ]

    Video Adapter Properties:
Device Description NVIDIA GeForce Go 7800
    Adapter String GeForce Go 7800
    BIOS String Version 5.70.02.30.12
    Chip Type GeForce Go 7800
    DAC Type Integrated RAMDAC
    Installed Drivers nv4_disp (6.14.10.7859 - nVIDIA ForceWare 78.59)
    Memory Size 256 MB

The sound driver (which is a huge problem) is:
    ]---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    SigmaTel STAC9200 @ Intel 82801GBM ICH7-M - High Definition Audio Controller [A-1] PCI

    - I've installed the driver but all these "choppy" problems occurred after I heard a beep (I know that sounds like a general statement) come out of my computer as I was playing "Spore".

I hope this was enough information to help you help me but if not, please let me know.

Sorry. Also I had no yellow marks next to anything in the device manager. :)

So, you're saying the PC ran perfectly for about 8 hours while gaming and surfing the net. You then heard a beep. Since that first beep, things have been choppy and lagging? Is that right? The beep may have been a temperature alarm but typically these alarms are much more than a beep. Have you checked the system temps? Use HWMonitor or PCWizard to get the system temps (and voltages) and post them here. Run the full defrag too, and it may be a good idea to run an extended memory diagnostic as well.... Since you've just done a clean install, you can always do it again if you don't have too much stuff installed yet. Maybe something just got a bit 'out of whack'.

Thx but I took the easy way out and just re-installed XP.
I did run a diagnostic on the hard-drive and got a DST failure. I had a friend re-install XP for me to save myself the headaches.

But Thanks for trying to help me out.:)
