Theres no shortage of threads on the forum about problems with folks and their sound cards and drivers and today I present myself no different, I've searched for hours trying to find someone that had a problem that was just like mine but I couldn't, so here goes:

Recently I purchased a brand new Asrock P4VM900 with onboard Realtek ALC660 High Definition Audio.

After a fresh install of a Windows XP SP2 disc and the installation of the Audio Drivers from the support CD issued by Asrock, I have no sound whatsoever.

Now I've checked out my divice manager, no conflicts, it says Realtek High Definition Audio

I've visited the Asrock website and downloaded the drivers provided by them for this motherboard model too and they didn't work either.

My 4-in-1 chipset driver is also installed just fine.

I can visit audio-enabled places like youtube, even play audio files and the system genuinely believes it's playing music and that everything is hunky dory there's just not a peep coming from the speakers.

Ah- You might think, thats probably a hardware problem?

Well I swapped out the speakers, nothing, tried using the front jacks which are attached to the motherboard via a different socket, nothing. Surely both audio jacks can't be broken and if it was a soundcard issue then there'd be SOME error, right?

The most enraging thing about the whole scenario is that there's not an error, a conflict or even the slightest inclination that the audio isn't working perfectly despite the fact that, as I mentioned there's not a peep from it!

Any ideas you guys have that I haven't already thought of would be great.

    HI

Double check in Services that the Windows Audio Service is started and startup type is set to Automatic.

Also in Control Panel > Audio Sounds and Devices > click the Audio tab and in playback make sure your hardware device is the chosen one in the dropdown > click Apply.

EDIT: plus if you open up the little speaker icon in your system tray make sure no volume slider is low and mutes not ticked.

Yep, it was all correct to begin with. Still no sound.

Oh I also forgot to mention I had an emachines 820, I changed the original motherboard and reformatted the Harddrive, I don't know if this information is relevant but it's there anyway

I recently had a sound problem that had a fresh install. That person had a similar problem and all that was needed was her DirectX installed. Are all your updates current?

Yeah its all up to date. I went out today and spent a $5 on budget-*** soundcard, installed it and had no problems. While I'd love to see what this incredible REALTEK HIGH DEFINITION ALC660 SUPERSOUND MIND****ERâ„¢ sounds like, I'll be satisfied with my dinky budget hardware, at least it works.

Look in the System Devices section of Device Manager. Is the MS UAA Bus Driver or HD Audio Controller showing there?

No because I went into the bios and turned the damn thing off.

We need to know if the UAA is installed properly. If it isn't, Realtek HD will not work.
Unless, you are just going to stick with the add-on card.
