I have Vista Ultimate (32 bit) and schedule weekly defrags with the built in Vista defragger. I was reading an article on line where the geek was singing the praises for the Auslogics Disk Defrag which is free which and is what I am looking for. Or is there a better free one ?
How would you rate this program to use with Vista and would you say that the defragger in Vista is weak ?

    Thanks, Schaeffdog

I heard that was pretty good as well. Never used it though. I schedule Raxco PerfectDisk to defrag C drive every early morning while I sleep. The job is done in 10 mins. Works great.

The Windows defragger is good for general use. I wouldn't have a problem using it.

    Hi

Vista's defrag is good and fine to use, NTFS file format that is the defualt in Vista, doesnt fragment as much as the older FAT32 formats, as built into the format is some breathing space for files ( smaller ones ) to grow a bit, so this cuts down on fragmentation.

The Vista firewall employs a space defrag which I would suspect that Auslogic's one does too as its only in the main retail ones as in O&O, Diskeeper and Raxio that use other methods of defrag from Access, Name, Modified and Space ( I tend to do an Access defrag maybe three times a year as the Intelligent defrag in O&O kicks in and just does tidy up work when needed and is done in no time ).

I would try out the Auslogic one and see if you like it but, I woudl also feel that the Vista built in one is good enough, just could have done with a GUI so that you could see what it had done. Some more info on Vista's defrag http://blogs.technet.com/filecab/ar...s-cover-why-windows-vista-defrag-is-cool.aspx

I run both Auslogics and the built-in defrag on my XP Pro PC. I run Auslogics 2-3 times a week, and the Windows defrag 1-2 a month. Works fine. I have to agree with Halo: the Vista defrag's lack of a GUI or even a progress indicator is real negative as you have no idea what's going on, or if it's even doing anything. I usually use Auslogics when defragging a Vista PC, mainly because I like to see what's going on.
