authentication countdown

I legitimately own DV Rack, software for monitoring/recording video on a laptop. It installs with a reg. #, then gives you 7 days to authenticate it online. Problem is, the auth. process doesn't work unless you install an update, which (for me) makes the software produce unusable clips. I'm working with them on it.

Question: where is the countdown info stored? Is this a file in the registry? If I could reset the timer, I could at least use it in 7 day increments.

As you are already working with them on the issue you mentioned you should ask the company in question how to deal with this until they have sorted the problem.

They are not always fast to respond, they're trying to find an old update that won't have this issue, and meanwhile I'm missing shooting days. I'm trying to resolve this in any way I can.

My question is still, isn't there a standard location for this timing data within the OS?

If you need proof that I'm a legit owner, I can provide it through a link to the DVR "registered users only" message board on which my messages appear.

There isn't a standard location for this information, more likely than not it will be in a hard to find location in the registry.

This is why I recomended asking the company in question for the location or a solution to this.

The only other option is to wait and see if anyone with the same software has a solution and answers this thread.

Thanks! What if I uninstalled, used my SystemSuite6 to find/remove unused registry items, and then reinstalled?

May or may not work. I'd probably go with won't work. The uninstall will leave the key there (if this is even how it works) but the SystemSuite won't know that that key is associated with that program and that that program isn't there any more.

If you have nothing to lose with an uninstal though you could give it a go.

You could use some form of logging software such as regmon by sysinternals to monitor which keys are changed or created during an installation and then see if any of those keys persist after an uninstall.

A clever codewriter can make it very difficult for the average Joe, to defeat his scheme. A temporary solution could be to keep resetting the system time and date at boot-up via the CMOS settings. This might extend your license just long enough.:)
