authenticity number

when you are about to format a hd to start all over on xp how do you look in the computer to see the auth number the computer given to me is a bunch of parts put together and the guy said that windows xp is legit but not to the number on the sticker on the case. I checked to see if windows up would update it and it did so it must be legal. how do I check through the computer for number
