Auto update screwed up?

I have automatic updates set for 7 a.m. daily. My power settings are: Monitor off after 15 minutes, never turn off hard disks, never go to system standby, never go to hibernate. When I jiggle the mouse the first time after 7 a.m., I get a message that updates are available. What happened to automatic updating? When I click to update, the update that is downloaded is this: "Security Update for Microsoft XML Core Services 4.0 Service Pack 2.0." When done, I rest the cursor over the yellow shield in the system tray and it says that updates are available. I click the shield and the same update that I just downloaded and installed shows up. It does this every time--no matter what time of day. What's going on here? Thanks.

Thanks for that link. Very helpful website. It shows no missed updates for me. As a matter of fact, it shows four of those "Security Update for Microsoft XML Core Services 4.0 Service Pack 2.0." updates for today, three for Oct. 19, two for Oct. 18, and one each for the previous three days. I suppose those duplications are because I was clicking to update each time I saw that notice on the yellow shield. But still--why is that notice showing up, indicating that that particular update had not been downloaded and installed when apparently it had been?
