when trying to install "Windows Installer 3.1", it always cannot be installed. Other updates do this too. Any suggestions?

My copy of Windows XP SP2 is validated, and I installed windows installer 3.1 v2, and auto updates still dont work...shutting down windows to install the updates doesnt work either...

i get a BSOD though now every time i restart my computer (right as it says "logging off") so i will investigate that and post more about it soon

What is BSOD error message in full, I wouldnt personally have installed SP3 to try and fix this as installing an updated version to a faulting OS can cause more issues than when you started.

Sadly your bugcheck is not complete, Adryn is very good at these so hopefully he will pop in to advise on those.

    Hi

    I would 1st off uninstall SP3.

The check your malware free, very important and do it to the Malware Read Me standards, nto just a few scans.

Do you get any error mesages from Auto Updates window on what the failure was? if so post, also if you do get an error code then please search for Windowsupdate.log and attach it, before following on with last option on the scripts to fix AU.

    Info on Windowsupdate.log http://support.microsoft.com/kb/902093

and then at bottom of this page is some scripts to run to fix automatic updates http://www.amset.info/windows/auto-updates.asp run all threee in order they are listed.
