The 'red' X icon in the sys tray indicates Automatic Updates is off. However, when checking System Security in the control panel it indicates it is on and set for 3am every day. When I check the Windows Update Site and click on Express, I receive the following message:

    Error number: 0x80070424
The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are trying to view.

I have rebooted and gone to the Windows Update Site a few different times with the same result. I can't determine with any certainty whether or not I have Automatic Updates, and if I don't, it seems I won't be able to update manually.

    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thank you for your efforts, but I couldn't resolve the issue described in the links. However, through further searches on the internet I found a result that did work for me and am passing it on:
