    Hey everyone. When I turned on my computer I got a icon in my system tray for Windows Security Alert and when I click on it it brings up my Windows Security Center and Automatic Updates is turned off, when I go to turn it on it tells me to go to the control panel and do it. So after going to the control panel the radio button is marked for automatic updates on, and I hit apply but it doesn't do anything. I tried a system restore and it didn't work. Any ideals? I did hear one where it tells to delete a registry key if I go to

    start -> run -> regedit -> HKLM -> SOFTWARE -> Polocies -> Microsoft -> Windows -> then WindowsUpdate but I didn't see a folder for that, but then it said to delete in the right pane disableautoupdate or something and when I looked under Windows NT -> WindowsMediaPlayer I seen a disableautoupdate file, but I'm not sure if that's wise to delete something like that. Not sure if that makes any sense but any help most appreciated.

    I did run Malaware Anti-Bytes and I'll have to run it again if you want to see the log but it did make mention of the disabled registries.

    Yea that didn't work at all, I went to the site, start -> programs -> windows update and I clicked the express button and I got this message on the following page:

    [Error number: 0x80070424]
    The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are trying to view. The options provided below might help you solve the problem.

    regsvr32 /s wuaueng1.dll
    regsvr32 /s wuaueng.dll
    regsvr32 /s wups.dll
    regsvr32 /s wups2.dll
    regsvr32 /s wuweb.dll
    regsvr32 /s wucltui.dll
    run each of these commands in Command prompt, pressing ENTER after each one. Reboot PC and attempt windows update again

    Alright I will do that then. Also I went to a site and came across something and it seemed to work but here is what I did

    start -> run -> then I typed %SYSTEMROOT%\SYSTEM32\REGSVR32.EXE %SYSTEMROOT%\SYSTEM32\WUAUENG.DLL

    and the windows update icon wasn't on my system tray anymore and then it allowed me to perform windows update but after that windows update I got somethings that could not be installed, here is what wasn't installed, perhaps you can see something.

    Security Update for Windows XP (KB2544893)
    Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 4 on Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 x86 (KB2518870)
    Security Update for Windows XP (KB2536276)
    Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 4 on Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 x86 (KB2478663)

    This does the same thing as above. Except it only reregister's one of .dll files (WUAUENG.DLL). The one i posted reregisters more.

    Looks like your .net framework updates are failing. You could try completely uninstalling them from Add/Remove programs first. 1.1, 3.5, 3.5 SP1, 4

    Then use this tool to clean them up even more. Found here:

    http://blogs.msdn.com/b/astebner/archive/2008/08/28/8904493.aspx

    If prompted to reboot, please do so,

    Then try to run windows update again

    Now that I'm looking I don't see any .NET Frameworks installed under my control panel. But here is what I see that may be what your referring to perhaps:

    Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable
    Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable - x86 9.0.30729.17
    Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable - x86 9.0.30729.4148
    Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable - x86 9.0.30729.6161

    MSXML 4.0 SP2 (KB954430)
    MSXML 4.0 SP2 (KB973688)

    Windows XP Service Pack

    Those aren't related. I would just run the removal tool

    Then try to run windows update.

    Hmm, well I looked at that removal tool and it said to only use it as a last resort, I'm curious to know if I run this tool then what happens if it still doesn't work? Do I have any other options after that or would I probably have to do a re-install? thanks for your help.

    The only thing this tool does is remove traces of .net framework. You don't have to use it if you don't want to.

    Without access to Task Manager, the logs and Process Explorer, I'd have to suggest a thorough check for the presence of malware; if Malwarebytes had been installed but not running at the time of an infection, there's no guarantee that it hasn't been compromised already.

    Hi, I would like to use it but I guess what I'm concerned about is if I ran it and my updates still don't work then what would be my next option, unless this thing is 100% full proof.

    Did you ever run what I suggested in this post?

    Yea I did that, I did comment on it to see what directory should I do that under or if it mattered but I did try it and nothing happened. I did try the other way to it and you said it did the same thing but this reregisters more.

    Sorry to butt in but might this not have any bearing on the failed .NET updates?

    But when I do my Windows Updates they failed for .Net framework. What do you think it could be? I ran all my scans. I use malaware anti-bytes, super antispyware, and microsoft security essentials.

    Hm well I tried searching for KB2478663 and I got an actually .exe file which I ran and the first screen I got was KB2478663 does not apply or is blocked by another condition on your computer.

    I think what Earthling was trying to check was that you do actually have .NET installed. If it's not installed, any updates are doomed to failure.

    A couple of times recently where I've checked up on failed updates, I've found that some of the updates weren't applicable to the software installed. Even MSFT can't write 100% foolproof spyware, it seems ;)

    Good news. So where do I go from here. Do I just download .net framework 4? or do I gotta download starting from 1 or something? thanks for your help, everyone's help.

    Well this sucks. I ran it and I get Installation did not succeed. .net framework 4 has not installed because of a fatal error during installation. Here is my log.

    I also installed ccleaner before to see all the hidden programs under add / remove programs, lol. But I see no .net framework of what so ever listed. Would I need to start from the bottom up or something? or should I run that one utility .net fix clean up utility?

    You don't have to start with 1 as each version of .NET stands on its own. You can try .net fix and if that doesn't work you could run sfc /scannow from the command line. However you do need an XP installation disk to run that.

    I'd take a long think about this:

    If you don't have any programs installed that require .NET libraries to run, you don't need .NET. If you decide to install it 'just in case', install it from the bottom up, 1.0, 1.1, 2.0 ... 3.5 ... to ensure that you have all software designed with the different versions covered. Once you have .NET installed, it will add to the possible vulnerabilities and ongoing patching required to keep Windows reasonably secure.

    Hm well that's good to know. I guess this is a stupid question but how do i tell which programs require .net? If I have programs that require .NET will the updates automatically ask me to update so n so for .net framework or if I don't have any programs that require .net will the updates don't ask me? because after running cleaner utility its not asking for those 2 updates anymore.

    BTW I cant thank you guys enough for helping me out.

    Then personally I'd leave it right there. If you subsequently install any software that needs a .NET version you will be notified during installation.

    I'm running XP and only have .NET 1 and .NET 2 (and probably .Net 2.1) installed because one program wanted it.
    I have all the other .NET updates hidden. If I don't install them, then I have fewer updates and patches to do.
    If a program needs something I don't have installed, it will tell me. So far, nothing has complained.
