I use the automatic overclocking just because its easier and helps to reduce noise. When you're just on the desktop and not playing a game or other graphics intensive program, it slows the clock speeds to reduce heat and therefore letting the fan run at lower speeds. When you DO start up a game it will automatically increase the clock speeds as far as the card can handle which results in best performance but can cause overheating if your cooling environment isnt suitable for a super hot card. The bad thing is that it can sometimes go too far and produce artifacts. If that happens, you can run the thing to automatically detect your highest possible clock speeds and then drop it down a little from the max.

I like presets. When in 2D, i severely underclock the card. Helps really reduce temps. However, in 3D mode, I raise it to max stable for the card.

    But that's just me.
