AV Program for Windows 2003 Server

Wasn't sure whether I should post this in "Networking," but decided to post here because it isn't a question about a network as such.

Let me preface this by stating that I am way over my head when it comes to networks and networking, and the servers that give rise to them, but I need to learn a few things fast.

It's my understanding from other threads that free antivirus software for servers is few and far between.

First of all, a server does *need* anti-virus software, yes? (dumb question but I have a reason for asking)

If so, is there a program that is clearly "better" and if so, why?

Thanks, I'll give that program a whirl. Any recommendations for realtime onguard protection? I'm googling this issue but not trusting the reliability of what I'm finding.

Can programs like MalwareBytes, et al., be used on a server?

The network in question at least appears to have a hardware firewall.

 

I use Symantec Enterprise on my campus network. It sends me emails if a virus is picked up. It isnt free though.

I'm more interested in "functional" than "free." :-D

Is it necessary to have AV software on a server that is largely a file server rather than an applications server? It does have a constant Internet connection (behind a hardware firewall, no software firewall AFAICT). As I said, I'm a bit over my head here.
