Hi guys, got a friend who's interested in an audio setup for his tv, and he gave me this criteria

Any input from you guys would be great

(xe.com tells me that £400 is equivalent to $782)

6.1 and 7.1 systems are already out, so future proof isn't in his cards...

They still take 5.1 setups though I'd imagine? Can you recommend any at all?

    My bad!

A brand we haven't heard of, good reputation though?

Yeah, they are a good brand. Not as high end as say, Harman Kardon or Denon, but not as low end as say, Pioneer, Panasonic, etc.

Midrange, right where you are aiming at.

Onkyo, Denon, Harmon Kardon are all considered medium grade, though they do have a few that in the range of $2000+.

Receivers really do not go out of style like home computers. I bought a nice sony (low/medium) receiver about 7 years ago, that is still working 5.1 110 per channel.

Make sure you don't go for the hype of a receiver that puts out 1000 watts or whatnot. That is false advertising, but they put it out there anyway.

For an on topic post, the link ye gave (mcadam) is an okay receiver choice, but are ye looking to buy an all in one system, or individual components?

How large is the room your friend is putting the system in?

A small room, like mine can handle only 5.1 to 6.1, but going into a LARGE room, a 7.1 system would be nice.

The link you gave says 75x7 watts. A small or medium sized room should be okay.

How high are the celings, what is the dimensions of the room. Speaker placement is a must. Floor speakers or wall mounted?

I don't see how that is false advertising. Wattage for any amplifier is per channel, not the full wattage for each channel.

So, each channel outputs a certain wattage. While that may not always add up to 1000 watts, it does when you consider that most receivers have the ability to have two different sets of front speakers, so thats two extra channels that have to be taken into consideration.

Hi Guys, im mcadams friend, i couldnt remeber my log-in details, but i found them now, lol

To answer a few questions, its going to be going into my bedroom which is a small-ish room, although when i move out and take it with me it will probaly be in a larger room so i think a 5.1 or 6.1 system would do.

It would be easier to buy it as a package, but thats not always the best bet. Im happy to buy parts of it seperatley, i just dont have a clue which speakers i should choose :S I'd like them to be small as space is a bit of an issue, but still pack a punch.

Budget still stands at around £400 max, so if i set about £200-250 for the av reciever and then £150 for speakers including a sub. Im happy to buy extra speakers later if its worth paying more money to get a quality pair of speakers. Ideally i'l just be connecting my xbox 360 and my TV, maybe later down the line a DVD player, so it doesnt need more connections than i can count! but a few extra ones would be good

If you could suggest some brand names for recievers and speakers to get me started it'd be great :)

    Benny.
