Hi i've just installed linux do I need to install a anti virus if so which one is best

 

I wouldn't worry about an anti virus but it cant hurt. For Linux I would suggest Clamwin

I would just be careful about executing bash scripts and .bin files.

 

What Linux version did you install?

 

It's Ubuntu 10.4

 

avair, you will not need AV, as the kernel has been updated against the few Linux virus in the wild. YOu can install clamav from Synaptic if you feel you must.

and if you think its out of date, then there is this at the bottom

most, if not all, linux antivirus are for scanning email attachments, shared network files, anything that can be passed on, etc - to stop infection of a windows machine,

for example, you get an infected mail from an infected windows machine,
it will not infect you but you can forward it and infect another windows machine,
with a linux antivirus it will scan the mail and (hopefully) stop the infection,

best bet is a bit of common sense, use the built in firewall, never allow root access to something that just 'pops up',
always, always only use software from your repositories,
i never install from outside my repo's - why ?
because my repo's have been fully tested and i can't be sure that an 'unknown' source has
