Avast free and Zone Alarm free

I noticed that the Avast free i have is 154 mb and on the MG download site it shows 47.8 mb. Did I download a bunch of stuff I don't need? Also not sure if I need the Zone Alarm toolbar. Thanks in advance for you responses!

 

Often we have versions here at Majorgeeks that are not so easy to find on the makers sites. The makers like you to download versions that offer a trial of the full versions or full suites. The ZA toolbar is a renamed version of the Ask toolbar, I consider it crapware but it probably helps pay for the freeware we all like; decline to install it anyway or uninstall it if it gets in via the backdoor.

Beware, there are also malware sites out there pretending to offer the real thing, too! Some of them look pretty authentic.

 

Thanks satrow! I just uninstalled the Zone Alarm toolbar. Still not sure why the Avast I have is so much bigger than the one on MG download page. I downloaded my Avast here at MG download page.

 

I just tested the download size on one of the links there before I made my earlier reply, 52k filesize - about 48MB. Which page were you on Stan?

satrow reinstalled Avast free from the MG download site. Shows 158MB file size in the programs and features in the control panel. Go figure!

I wonder if the 100mb+ difference is from from the plugin webroot that is added automatically?

 

I just checked the filesize from all 4 download servers on this page and setup_av_free_eng.exe is 48MB on all.

Once it's uncompressed and all the updates for detections added, it'll be significantly more - this is common to all A/V's and anti-malware apps.
