Avast not working correctly

I've been running Avast v4.6 home edition and update regularly.
However the virus chest isn't working which is kinda scary! This has only happened fairly recently.
I keep getting error messages saying the initialization of the chest files failed, Program cannot use chest client (null), RPC communication failed.
Any ideas guys?

 

Have you tried downloading the Avast setup again, deinstalling the existing faulty program and reinstalling downloaded program (make sure you are not on the net while doing the deinstall) You will then have to reregister I guess.

Agree with Robert, uninstall, run a regsistry cleaner and re-install Avast.

Before you uninstall Avast, though, right click on Avast in the system tray, click on "About Avast", and your Registration Key will be displayed. Write this down and enter it into a Word document or *.txt document for future reference. When you re-install Avast, simply cut and paste the Rego key from your stored document and paste it into the appropriate place when asked by Avast. It works, I've done it a couple of times. Bazza

Although I suppose the acid test will come when and if I get a virus

Try eicar's antivirus test file. http://www.eicar.org/anti_virus_test_file.htm You don't want to have a run-in with a real virus if there might be a problem.

 

Avast certainly intercepted my attempt to download the first eicar.com as a Virus. I was able to download the other 3 without problems. Will run Avast scan later after I log off MG. Thanks JustPlayin for this site link. Bazza

Thanks Just Playin. Apologies for not replying sooner.That link was really useful.
Avast picked up on all of the test files and allowed me to abort the downloads however the eicar.com.txt file produced a blank mozilla page after I clicked abort
(I've now shown the sheer lack of knowledge on my part haven't I? Don't laugh, I'm only new at this kinda stuff! )
I'd be interested to know if anyone else got similar results.
I'm fairly happy that I'm "safe" unfortunately I just have an irresponsible partner with very bad surfing habits
