So here is the mighty debate question, Avast! or AVG (or other, if your inclined)...

Hmmm.... well, right now I'm using Panda. But due to some near unsolvable problems in the past and other niggling update problems, I'm not going to pay for it once my free year runs out. I may go for Avast, ive heard good things about it. I got put off AVG as it seemed to detect hardly anything that I came across in my travels. e.g. a friend of mine had a computer with about 70 different varients (well, maybe not 70, but around that) on it, and it detected zilch. fully updated and everything. Ended up using Stinger and housecall links to get rid of them all...

Yes, I too used AVG in the past. However, my problem was that it could detect the viruses on my computer, but it wouldn't delete/repair/quarantine any of them! Not just the ones in my Windows folder, but anywhere. They may have improved their software by now but I'm still wary. Anybody out there have any better luck with AVG?

Dunno about AVG. I came off McBLOATafee a year or so ago and tried a couple of other freebies, then Avast. Now am convinced. Avast for me, all the way.

I was a devoted AVG user for many years, but after the problems with updates and such that the free AVG version was having, I switched to Avast and have been very happy with the way it works.

    Protector Plus 2000

I've tried all of the AV's in the poll, somehow stumbled on to protector plus 2000. Been using it for about three weeks and have been VERY pleased:

    Give it a try:

I had AVG for about a year till it started having trouble updating it.
I went to Avast and have no problems at all with it and love the way it updates automatic with no prompting :)
Dont know yet about how good it is catching and deleting viruses as so far I havent got one since I changed over.

Robo, i'm using AOL v7 UK version. As I understand it AOL v9 is not for dialups.
Was there ever a v8 for dialups? Using Win 98SE.. Baz

    AOL v7 AOL v8 AOL V9 Avast--what a mess I'm in.

Thanks Robo. Now I'm really confused. Will google a few searches for AOL v8 AOL v9 etc.
I know Cowboy keeps telling me to scrap AOL and I will probably just use it for established email addresses and go to someone else. I hope to move to Cairns soon and onto broadband so everything is in a state of flux at present. Baz

I used AVG until the autoupdate went fritz. Then downloaded and installed AVAST! and am much happier with it. DOWNSIDE: Avast! is very slow when scanning. I just scan when I can allow time. I really like the autoupdate and other features. My vote is AVAST!

    Voted for Avast

I just stopped using AVP 3.0 (Yep old stuff) after I got tired of BSOD once every week caused by the AVP-Driver.
I installed AVG 6.0 instead on recommendation that the AVG would use less resources than Avast. Though after getting BSOD once a day with AVG (I didn't want to bother looking into it, as there is no support with the free edition), so it was thrown out again (And become annoyed one have to manually uninstall the AVG-driver).
Now I'm running Avast, which have been acting good for 4 days without any hickups.

Things I like about Avast (Compared to AVG)
    - The listing of files being accessed in systray
    - The ability to customize file scanning by excluding folders/files

The 3 Avast processes on my computer uses the following amount of memory
    ashdisp.exe : 5.5 MByte
    ashserv.exe : 13.5 MByte
    aswUpdSv.exe : 0.2 MByte

time for me to learn something!!!

How do you set it to do that?

  18. snakefoot

    snakefoot Sergeant Major

    1. Click the Avast! icon in the systray
    2. In the dialog press "Details >>>"-button
    3. In the "new" dialog press "Customize"-button
    4. Select Advanced-tab
    5. Check "Show detailed info on performed action".

I have a question, do you leave your antivirus and firewall on all the time, or just firewall?
    At present I have eztrust.
    thanks jeannie

jeannie :) Yes to the firewall -- all the time from startup 'til you close up your pooter for the day/night. Your Anti-Virus, well that depends. If it has a resident protection (or protections) that stays on watch 24/7 and it doesn't eat up resources -- MacAfee and Norton are famous for being "hoggy" --
it's okay to leave the protection on and the icons in your start tray. Personally I use Avast and let its resident EMail watchdog stay. I keep the application itself off until I want to scan for viruses, then I turn it on and scan. I usually do a deep scan about once a week and an occasional "What the heck, I'm not doing much at the moment," standard or light scan just for the hell of it.

    firewall?

is avast a firewall, if not what is best freeee firewall, I have windows me, hp xe749
I have eztrust for anti and firewall, should I switch?

    Re: firewall?

No,jeannie, Avast is not a firewall. It's an anti-virus. Here's a listing of the anti-virus app on major geeks list. As you can see, there are a LOT of them. If you read the rest of the posts in this thread you'll determine that a lot of folks like Avast (free) and a lot of folks like AVG (free) and some like Panda (costs). It's a case of personal preference. Read up on each one's strong points and try a couple out. I'm not familiar with eztrust, so I can't comment of it. You'll find that most of us here on MG use ZoneAlarm for our firewall, either the free version or the shareware versions; either zonealarrm plus or zonealarm pro. I use the free Home Edition of ZA and it works fine for me.
