Hey guys, I just reinstalled Windows on an old PC I use to download and save drivers on. I did a Full Format, then reinstalled XP sp3. I then installed Avast Free, then I clicked the Register button and it went to a page asking if I wanted to upgrade, it never took me to the registration page, so I clicked Settings and under General I clicked Registration and it said I am Registered. That has never happened before, no matter how many times I installed or reinstalled Avast it always made me register. Any thoughts on why and how it automatically registered me without my name and e-mail address being supplied ? :confused

Ok, Avast forum was really no help in giving me an answer. I was just wondering if this could be a problem or not. Do I leave it alone or do I uninstall/reinstall to see if it makes me register.

Was Avast installed on this machine previously? How much time is left on the registration? Mine says 294 days.

Avast, free IIRC, if unregistered, had a 30 day count down for usage. Do you see that validity in the GUI? If no it should be good, else avast should pop up in a month to advise.
    Why not just register here.
Not used Avast in a bit.

    Cheers..

How you doing plastidust, yea it was installed previously, but like I said, I gave it a Full format then installed Windows. It say I have 298 days left, but I installed it 3 days ago.

Hey sikvik, I thought about registering it but with it automatically being registered I wasn't sure if something a little devious was going on or not.

Maybe they are being devious and want the uninitiated to upgrade to paid! Like the MBAM, GUI which proclaims a real time paid- to be a FIX. I"M Not saying real time on MBAM is not good.
    Cheers..

If the machine doesn't display any kind of nefarious symptoms, think I'd let it ride for a while. The number of days left is a bit of a puzzler though. Maybe Avast recorded a mac address or something from the previous installation.

Is this installation of Avast version "2015.10.0.2208"?

Yea plastidust that's my version. All this is most likely harmless, but being that I've been through the Avast registration many times in the past, it is just more confusing than anything else.

I've had some minor problems since I installed Avast in October on this computer. Two weather related programs haven't been able to update.

Except for one false positive years ago, never had any problems with Avast before, but they have made quite a few changes. "Home Network Security" and no pop-up for the definitions updates, to name a couple.

The definition update pop up never really bothered me, actually my little girl asked me, "Who is that lady saying something was updated" ? Which I thought was funny. And like you, I've never had any problems with it and it never slowed me down at all.

I'm still puzzling over your registration issue, mainly the day count.:confused

Yea, kind of miss the update alerts. Wife would say, "who was that?":-D Miss the info displayed when mousing over the tray icon too.

plastidust, I tried uninstalling Avast with Revo, but even a Forced Uninstall wouldn't work, so I used the avast removal tool, and that did it. Then I reinstalled Avast and it was already registered again, plus my 298 days are now 265. I'm going to ride it out and see what happens. Thanks to all of you who tried to help, it's very much appreciated.

Could be some data cross reference screw up at their end.
Since you've had previous installations and maybe on more than one machine, and all are identified through the same address,
it could be a data reference link error within their database.

When uninstalling Avast using an uninstaller like Revo, all of Avast's features and shields should be "shut down/disabled" first from within the Avast UI. It's important to disable the Avast "self-defense module":
Settings > Troubleshooting > un-check "Enable Avast self-defense module". Close Avast UI.

In Windows Services, stop/disable any Avast services/startups. I usually run Microsoft Autoruns - |MajorGeeks| too, just to double check.
Run Revo Uninstaller. When finished with Revo, run cCleaner including the registry.

Re-boot in safe mode and run the Avast removal tool(avastclear.exe - |MajorGeeks|).
Re-boot in normal mode and run cCleaner again including registry. This really isn't necessary but I do, just to check.

If it's an x64 OS then you would need to use one of the following:
There are other uninstallers that will remove/uninstall 64-bit programs but I've not used them.

Your procedure is probably quite similar if not identical. Just thought I would go through it because it's always worked for me, although I haven't tried it with version 2015. But thought you might want to try if your method is different. Not sure it's worth the fuss though.

As mjnc says, it could very well be a mix up at their end in which case anything you do on your end would be wasted effort.

    Edit:
Just thought of something. I uninstalled McAfee in October and there was mention of being sure that it was registered before uninstalling. That way if you re-installed it your registration would be re-activated, if I understood the message correctly. Anyway, maybe something similar has recently been implemented with Avast.

Yea buddy, I followed the procedure it was just a pain to deal with. I'm one of those people that seem to have to find an answer in case some other user runs into the same problem. I think mjnc may be right to. Thanks mjnc. Now I'll just have to see how all of this plays out. :wine
