Getting an error message from Avast AV upon attempting to update - "The Package is Broken".

    Any clues?

    Thanks,

~*UPDATED*~ ok, not "exactly" sure what I did, other than "hammer" a bit on the keyboard and mouse (real technical term, "hammer" - huh?) ... anyway, disabled some recent FF add-ons that I had installed before leaving the PC for a week or so ... that and a couple of Restarts seems to have cleared the error. I had tried the Avast Forum, but found it very difficult to navigate ... not even sure if my question there was posted (AFTER I DID Register).

    Thanks just the same,
    g.

this is straight from the avast website. you "right click" the avast icon, and select updating to update the program. g/l, sos

Thank you. I had tried, several times, to manually update, to no avail.

I think in my case it was one (or more) of the recent FF add-ons/extensions, so when I have time, I'll go back and try enabling them - ONE-AT-A-TIME (this time ... for once!) - and see if I can narrow it down to one that was causing the conflict.

    Thanks again!

    Hi

Not heard of Firefox add-ons conflicting with an AV, but then stranger things have happened in the past, but if you didnt have Firefox running or even running in Firefox Safe Mode then the addons wouldnt be loaded to conflict.

Likely with the anount of tweaking/installing new apps or possible multiple issues your having is that Avast is corrupted, so best advice is as in the last part of the link from Avast that sosaman gave is to uninstall Avast and run Ccleaner to clean up any temps and old registry components, is to then re-install Avast and the latest current version from HERE

*off topic advice would be to stick to installing and updating one application at a time, and once working ok, then go onto the next, this aids in troubleshooting the cause of the problem, over installing multiple applications, tweaking the OS, which leads to not knowing what caused the issue.

Thank you. I suppose I get confused as to which issue to address first, and then following THE systematic approach from there forward.

An AntiVirus program seems to be the first place to start - and yes, I think the problem is not with Avast, but rather with FF, as I AM having multiples of update and download problems (though Avast comes through each day and tells me (literally voices its updates - for those unfamiliar with the software, so ...?)

And again now, I've successfully confused myself here ...

I'll play with things a bit, and try to get a better read or bearing on the overall situation before I post back again ...

    Thanks much ...

If Avast it telling you that it updated ( yup with the voice ) then you should be fine, especially if its updated in past day or so, do check which virus definition file version you have and it should be as below as I just made sure my Avast is upto date.

If your have same codes in Program: 4.8.1201 and Vps: 080620-0 then your ok in regards to Avast and its update, so then time to continue in your already open Firefox thread to troubleshoot that as the cause of your issues.

Thank you. While still unsure about how to produce a "screenshot" such as yours (although occasionally I have been able to get some?!?), I did copy/paste this from my Avast Updater just now ... looks a bit different (?).

    Information about current update:
    Total time: 9 s

    - Vps: Already up to date
    (current version 080620-0)

    Server: download911.avast.com (75.126.203.73)
    Downloaded files: 2 (0.02 KB)
    Download time: 1 s

    Here it is "un-merged":

    Information about current update:
    Total time: 9 s

    - Program: Already up to date
    (current version 4.8.1201)
    - Vps: Already up to date

    Hi grc

No worries, I will cover with you at some point ( PM me an email address to contact you on ) how to deal with screenshots.

Back to Avast thought..... the versions of Program and Vps you have are identical to mine to your Avast is fine and upto date, So your Avast is working ok, so dont do anything to it as in uninstall which I mentioned earlier as your fine.

Best to use the Avast! Uninstall utility

Suggest you use the Avast! Uninstall utility

    I will add my suggestions

I feel one of the best way to overcome your problems would be to follow the below!
    [1]
Mostly it is not possible to fully uninstall avast! in the standard way with using the ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS in the control panel
Avast do suggest you always use the Avast uninstallation utility “aswClear”.

    [2]
Now how to uninstall the software using aswClear.exe:
Download aswClear.exe on to your desktop
    http://files.avast.com/files/eng/aswclear.exe?
    Start Windows in Safe Mode
    Open (execute) the uninstall utility
If you installed avast! in a different folder than the default, browse for it. (Note: Be careful! The content of any folder you choose will be deleted!)
    Click REMOVE
    Restart your computer

    [3]
Next have a newly downloaded Avast program and Install same.

    [4]
Then you can do a manual update of the Avast with = Right Click on the system tray "A" Icon = from the menu = updating = click on "iAVS update" and the "program update"

    Hope may help

    Hi Grc

While the instructions above will help you with an uninstall of Avast, however I dont feel the need for you to do this as from your post on the version codes you posted for me from Avasts Program and VPs your upto date.

So if you do still have the update issue, then and only then use the uninstaller Chaslang linked too.
