As I understand it the VRDB in Avast backs up information on files on the hard drive so that if in the future you are infected it has a reference when repairing the infected files. How many of you use this feature and how well does it work? Is it a good idea to generate a VRDB right away? And how different is this from using the system restore function of xp? Also about how much space does it take up to create the VRDB?

Can't answer all your questions as I use W98SE. I occasionally run VRDB but it takes a hell of a time to run, even on my relatively small 4 gig of data/files. Never had to test whether it works so cannot comment on this. On my laptop under Avast4\data, there is a file called 400.vps size 1,627kb. Including this file, this is over 1/3rd of my stuff on C:\drive, so I assume this is the VRDB backup. Don't know for sure. Will some Avast expert please butt in.

Thanks for asking about VRDB, by the way,as I think I may delete it and forget about VRDB. I'll rely on my other methods of backup. Someone may convince me to the contrary though. Bazza

Had a bit of drama with Avast update (see separate post). Has to re-install v 4.1. I think the 400.vps is for the virus definitions, not the VRDB backup. Maybe some Avast guru can confirm this for me. What is the name of the file for VRDB backup? Bazza
PS: Have disabled VRDB generation on this re-install. Baz

Thanks for the replys bazza! I did the update recently and had no problems with mine. I am surprised to not see more responces, as avast is well liked by many members on this site. Perhaps they don't use the vrdb feature.

I'm going to download the update to 4.5 and try again, right now. Then I will log off, run it, and be back tomorrow. Baz
