Win 7 Home ed, Mozilla Firefox,

Found antivirus not loaded, per action center, decided to use Avast
Goes thru setup shows Avast icon or animated logo. Avast does not load.
Shows spinning Avast logo, but nothing loads, let program run for few minutes, still would not load. Download was to be from internet.

    WHAT anti-virus program was that?

Was that a totally new download? By that I mean you didn't have it on the system before?

Correct, new. Program is Avast antivirus.

Also - tried to load MS updates. Setup, started program, left running to load went to bed. When I returned program was about 1/2 loaded.

Please make your posts in a little more "conversational-like" style so we can understand you. Are you saying that your original AV stopped working (What was the program?), and you replaced it (Did you un-install it first?) with Avast? Were you trying also to install Windows updates... at the same time before completing any of the above????

OK, reference your reply to my post.
A pop up (proper computer term?) appeared with a message I had a couple of problems with my computer. I cannot recall from whom. It stated basically I had no AV, some of my drivers were needed updates, I had not downloaded the latest MS updates. I cannot identify the message's originator. I thought I copied it for reference, that was not the case.
This computer was built for me about a year ago, and I have had no security problems I am aware of . I checked anyway, but found no AV. I decided on the Avast AV program, and tried downloading from its internet site. I got a message the program (download) stopped. A retry did the same. I did not uninstall as I found no AV installed. It has been too long for me to remember what AV I used on the computer I replaced. That is where I am now concerning the AV program Avast.
As for the MS updates, I had a message on my computer today the MS updates were installed. I haven't checked the drivers error messages.
    Hope this clarifies situation.

I suggest that you run CCleaner - use it's Registry tool and scan, then fix any issues found. Re-boot and then use the link provided to download the Avast version you wish. Report back about further problems with the download. *The idea that you've been using that new computer for a year without having an anti-virus program is concerning, to say the least.

This is getting ridiculous I cannot load CC cleaner Piriform. It wants to load with Chrome, tried a few sources, all for naught.
The load error message does not state a reason.

I surely do not understand, but now Chrome loaded and I am going to try from there to get CC cleaner loaded.
Aaaarrrrgh...Chrome want to also load on my phone, and I cannot determine how to bypass that. Do not want chrome on phone

Load or download? Please use the correct terminology. If you have been using this pc for an entire year without having an anti-virus, I would expect numerous problems occurring.

First it does, then it doesn't, then it will, then it won't.
Got cc ccleaner loaded, then to scan. Wanted to copy findings to here, but copy seems not the way to do that.

Please... "downloaded and installed" makes sense; where "First it does, then it doesn't, then it will, then it won't." leaves everyone scratching their heads. *After "Scanning for issues", choose to create a registry backup then Fix the issues.

After several tries at downloading CC Cleaner(correct term?) found one that worked for me and used it. Selected which programs (correct term?) to analyze, then cleaned them.
Was able to download (correct term?) Avast and run it. Surprisingly found no malware, but did locate some privacy issues, a couple of programs Avast disliked. In all this Yahoo wound up being selected as my default browser. Changed that back to Firefox. Still have the privacy issues, so I need to address those by deleting them I guess. I just have to find them.
So other than a dressing down for misuse of computer terminology, I am quite pleased with the help you gentlemen provided in solving the Avast situation. Thank you for all, except for the scolding. But, I believe I will survive that.

I by no means gave you a "dressing down", but you will find a reluctance to help you by members who feel that you should know better, given how long you've been a member here.

Please forgive a small comment here... judging by the number of posts you make I believe you spend more time nitpicking your computer and its workings than anything else! Do you really enjoy it at all?

Yes, with qualifications. The saying "These are the times that try men's souls," comes to mind
