got the power adapter for the averatec i got for $10.00. when I hit the power button only runs about 10 seconds. I reseated the ram, video card, removed dvd, replaced cmos battery; same results. Any ideas? Has pentium4 processor, 512 ram 60gb hdd

    Hi fellow Floridian.....
What did you get for $10, the whole computer or the power adapter?

If the Power Supply, are you sure it's heavy duty enough to power that PC?
Maybe the correct voltage, but way below the current rating. Eh?

I'm just guessing here, because I've never seen one of those computers before and I've been in the business for 30+ years. Sorry!

    Luck!

I got the laptop for $10.00. I paid $40.00 for a new cord. I finally got it to run, but now I have no screen. I tried hooking up to a desktop monitor, but still no luck so far.

Laptop? Ok that's not what I thought you had, from your first post.
    OK....now I'm on track.

Start up with no screen usually means that the PC did not go through the boot-from-bios sequence. That's all on the motherboard and has nothing to do with the HD or installed OS.

If the unit is over four years old, I'd first suspect that the CMOS battery is dead or below operating voltage.
Not being familiar with that brand or model of Laptop, I can't tell you where to find the battery to even check it.

Maybe a Google search would disclose that information. That's where I'd start, anyway.

If you were close enough, I'd say bring that PC over here and I'd help you scope it out. I'm a retired PC tech.
Anywhere close to Ocala/Dunnellon? If so PM me.

I have found the cmos battery. I replaced it with one that reads 4.79 volts. This laptop actually uses a desktop cmos battery. No, I live way up here outside of marianna. I'll tell you one thing; you don't have this laptop in your lap without a board; it'll fry you. It has a metal encased bottom-ouch!. I've plugged a desktop monitor to it and pressed fn-f4, but that don't help either.

Hmmmm! I've never seen a CMOS battery of that high voltage. The desktop batteries, for the past ten years or so, have been the CR-2032, 3v Lithium (coin type) battery.
Many laptops use that same battery, I suppose just for continuity.
I even hard wired one into a ten year old Toshiba laptop, to replace two little 1.5v ni-cad cells that had failed. It works just fine.

Too bad you're so far away. I love a good challenge. I don't get many, anymore.

    Cheers Mate, and Good Luck,
    :)

this is a desktop battery. I know it says 3v, but I checked to make sure it had voltage and that's what it read. But I guess I'll play with it some more for a little while. Yeah, it would be nice to have someone close by to help mull things over. I find two people dicsussing the same problem usually can come up with something if they talk it out loud with each other. Thanks and maybe we can get together on something again. I'm sure I'll run into more problems with other things I pick up here and there.
