Greetings, my friend has windows Vista, and she has had AVG 7.5 Free Edition installed since Feb. 2008. Now, she is getting messages thru the AVG to pay for her version by April 12 th, to the tune of $52+.... :confused Her AVG has been updating just fine, and she is concerned, as well she should be..

I wonder, tho, should she download AVG 8? Hey, I'm all ears here... :confused

Anyone else have any similar experiences?

    Thank you! :wave

Hi Petaluma, thank you so much for the info... I was confussed, because she just started to get those messages... I thought it odd, since she has had it for over a year....... I'll send her a note, and see if she wants to download the 8.5 version..., or if she wants to just stay with the 7.5.... I'll see her on Monday, and will see what she wants to do then.. Thank you again :wave

I thought AVG 7.5 free was going to be non supported after this spring?
Time to download the latest, I would go right to AVG 8.5 free.

Thank you for opening my eyes! :-D

AVG 7.5 free will no longer be supported after 12 April 09....I may be moving to Avast. AVG free forum has me skeptical about upgrading to 8.xx

If your friend wants to remove the paid version, it's best to remove it with the AVG removal tool. Select the tool here http://www.avg.com/download-tools and download it. Reboot after removal of the AVG paid version by this tool.

Then install one of the free: AVG, Avast or AntiVir. http://www.majorgeeks.com/page.php?id=20

As mentioned support for AVG 7.5 will cease soon.

PS: Perhaps your friend updated in error from the free version to a paid one. As a previous version 7.5 free AVG user I used to get "nudges" from Grisoft to update to their new one which was not free.

Well, this is good info also.... I know she had her ISP install it, and they always use the free version. It updated itself too, so I think it is time for a new one also.

Now, comes the biggest question: AVG 8.5 or Avast? :confused Personally, I never heard of Avast, but have heard of AVG. ;) Any idea how big the AVG 8.5 file is? That is another problem, as she is on a dial-up connection, and has Vista... Any way to have it burned to a CD from another computer and install with the CD? I can help her with either, but if it is really huge, I think the CD would be best..... Thanks!

I think it is time for a new one also. Will she need that removal tool for the version she has? Might it be a good idea to use it either way?

Avast, in my experience, has more false positives then any other AV. We get so many false positive reports from Avast users I refuse to use it. You can download 8.5, burn it and take it to this person.

Ahhh, thank you Major Attitude! ;) I am so glad I came here and asked FIRST! Yeah, she is my neighbor, and I can get it burned in town for her.. Then, just load it and install it. Cool.

Now, do you think it would be a good idea to run the 'tool' to remove the old one first? A huge thank you to you! ;)

Just wanted to thank Major Attitude for all his help here... We removed AVG 7.5 and installed AVG 8.5 yesterday and it went very well. No problems. Heck, we even had time to chit chat! :-D

Blades, I would suggest the AVG 8.5 also... It was a breeze to load.. ;)

Hi, I totally agree with Magor Attitude(of course he is one of the best). The latest Version of AVG8.5 is a good one. All the problems of the earlier versions seem to have been sorted out. Some sites recommend that you do a custom install and do not install: Link Scanner, or the Toolbar. Boneyeye

    TeeCee MajorGeek

Well, thank you boneyeye, we did install the toolbar, and I think the link scanner too... :confused

What do you say, Major A? Should I check and disable either , if it is even possible to do that? Or, just leave it? She hasn't complained about any problems YET. First time I have heard of this.... :confused

Ok, will look forward to what yous think. :wave

    Double edged sword.

1: Its great to participate and help find problems. When you can do this, if you care, you should.
2: If your a gamer, or your PC is and older or cheaper machine, it can cost resources. If you don't notice it, it is all good :)

Me? I try and stay lean and mean. Due to the testing I do, my machine is wiped about once a year. But, my situation is unique, as is yours, based on what I suggested above :)

Thanks M.A. Her machine is 1 year old,(last Dec.), and when I downloaded AVG8.5 , I did the whole thing... I talked to her yesterday, and she said she hasn't noticed anything unusual at all...Everything is working just fine. She is running Windows Vista, if that helps.. I figured, as long as there is no 'issues', might as well leave well enough alone.. ;)

Let me know if you think I should remove the those componants or disable them anyway... OK, thanks, ;)
