AVG 8.0.233 Udate Failure

On 1-29-09 AVG provided a rather large update to its freeware product. There appeared to be no problem with the download. The failure, however, occurs during the final moments of installation. I'm receiving: Update failed, general error - not enough memory, write error. I'm certain that memory can be eliminated as the problem. When I attempt to update again the download manager indicates that the download is already present and attempts to install, only to fail as before and issue the same error message. At this point the problem seems intractable making the product useless.

I'm using XP Professional, AVG 8.0.233, a Windows firewall, Spyware Blaster, and Ad-Aware 2008 as a secondary scanner.

If you read the AVG free forums, you'll see that many, many people are having problems with this update.

Personally, I'm avoiding the program update until I can go to that forum page and NOT find most of the posts discussing the issue.

However, what has worked for some people is following one of the moderators' links to the download site and downloading the whole AVG free 8 program (I know, it's close to 60 Mb, so it's a big one) and then running it and choosing the 'repair' install.

    Good luck!

Thanks for your response. On 1-30-09 someone at AVG's support forum informed me that I would have to download and install the latest version, an arduous and sometimes days long task with dial-up service that frequently disconnects for no apparent reason and usually at the worst possible moment in time. This morning I tried updating again fully expecting another failure. I was pleasantly surprised when it succeeded both quickly and gracefully. Although this could be premature, my thanks goes out to the individual or individuals at AVG who apparently solved the problem.

I'm glad to hear it's working for you. Apparently people are managing to get their updates fixed. I still haven't been offered the update on my laptop yet...and I'm OK with that.:-D I'll hold off a little while longer.

I've noticed the AVG staff are trying very hard to get things working properly, which is good. In the meantime, I'm still getting updated virus signature files for .176 on both my desktop and my laptop.

Postscript: The latest update succeeded as well. In nautical terms (forgive me), updating appears to be shipshape and clear sailing ahead.

My husband's pc reported an update failure this morning. I suspected that the servers were overwhelmed. I simply tell him when that happens to ignore it. If he finds it has not corrected itself in a day or two, then I start worrying about it and head to the AVG free forum to do some reading.

I spoke too soon - after two apparently successful updates the same problem occurred again.

On 2-1-09 I successfully completed two updates. Since I've already been burned once issuing an all clear, my prognosis is cautious optimism but not yet time to break out the champagne.

hi, I have read AVG Forums and there has been a lot of complaints about AVG 8.0. I do think that they have worked very hard to correct a lot of the problems. The pity is that they did not sort out the problems before releasing Version 8.0. They would have lost less users (me for one) if they had done so. Boneyeye

I like 8.0 and its later variants due to the comprehensive protection features. There have indeed been some updating issues but most of them have been corrected within a day or two by AVG. On two occasions I have had to run a small application that they provide in order to resolve an issue but the task was no big deal and only took a few minutes of time. However, the forum advice that I and others having the same problem recently received regarding the need to download and install the latest version (ouch) was apparently incorrect. I never did so yet recent updates have succeeded. Only time will tell if that recommended fix will be necessary.

I'm running AVG 8 on several computers without many problems.
I was not one of the first to switch over from 7.5 to 8. I also waited until they cleaned up the installer allowing you to deselect the safe search option using the custom install rather than the default.

I was also one of the first to use 8.0. I wasn't aware of the custom install feature. I just received an email from AVG asking me to provide records of the failure. I'm not sure if I possess the the technical know how to comply. The updating situation remains a little bizarre. The mostly good news is that I'm able to get updates with no problem. The bad news is that I less frequently still get the same failure warning mentioned previously. So long as the product is functioning and up-to-date (?) I guess that can live with the occasional warnings.

A possible solution would be to uninstall what you are currently running, then reboot. Do a clean install but this time choose the custom install so you don't get the safe site search and/or toolbar.

If you decide to do this, I'd recommend downloading the latest version of AVG free before you uninstall what you now have.

Thanks. An uninstall/reinstall with the latest version solution had apparently been recommended to those mentioning the same issue at AVG's support forum, myself included. I never went through the process, however, yet I have had no further update problems since the afternoon of 2-2-09. So far so good. My hunch is no further problems, for a while anyway.

A 21MB AVG program update was successfully installed today, 2-13-09, without the persistent "General error, write error - not enough memory problem". I had been able to get virus and spyware updates all along but the program update had always failed. Due to a mediocre internet connection that more often than not interrupts long downloads, I had never been able to do a clean reinstall with the latest version which probably would have solved the problem at an earlier date.

So are you now up to program version .234? I hear that one has been released already. I had downloaded the full .233 back on Feb 4th in case anything went wrong, and then I think they released another version of that after that date, and now I hear .234 is being released. I'm still sitting here with .176. I had decided to give it another week from today for all the troubles to get sorted out.

Oh I just opened a tab at Filehippo.com and I see they have .237 available for download! :confused :-D

It updates to .237 rather than to .234. Although I personally didn't have any issues I haven't checked their site to see if anyone else has had problems. The nagging problem that I was having was with the 1-29-09 .233 program update. It looks like this one has entirely resolved the issue.
