Has any one had problems with the new AVG 8.0 ? I am procrastinating B4 removing 7.5 and installing . Did the same with XP SP3 ( works )...The reason I ask here is because the AVG forum sometimes HAS its head not where it belongs
( on top of shoulders , I'll be nice..feel free to imagine where it might be:-D )

Any info would be appreaciated..Support ends on 08-31-08 for 7.5
    Thanks

I'm running 8 on two computers with no problem. Be sure that you do a custom install. Unselect the toolbar and the safe site thing. If you never download email to your computer, unselect the email scanner.

I have installed 8.0 and many, many PCs and only had maybe 2 problems; and that was that it wouldn't install for one reason or another. On 99% of the PCs, it installed fine and is still running fine to this day (AFAIK). Follow plodr's advice: turn off the security toolbar, turn off the email scanner, and turn off the link scanner. The link scanner is known to generate horrendous amounts of useless web traffic, which can actually have global effects on overall network speed. Believe it, or not!

If you're looking to replace AVG7.5, take a look at Rising Antivirus. It's fairly new, and I've been doing a 'review' of sorts on it (with help from other MG members). Check out this thread here at Major Geeks if you're interested :-D

    ( and I thought support for 7.5 ended on 12.31.2008 :confused )

I just posted about AVG8 in the malware forum: http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=168625

My main AVG problem is the resource use/bloat - but is there something better that provides the same/better protection at lower resource use?

When I look at memory use in task manager, AVG is always up there 2nd or 3rd highest. For example, right now Firefox is taking up the most memory at ~90,000K followed by AVG at around ~60,000K. If I start a new program AVG's CPU use jumps up momentarily (slows things I assume), and sometimes if I use another program to scan something, AVG's CPU use mirrors the scan. Granted, it's taking up resources because it's protecting the system, and the protection is 1st class imo, but my older computer has trouble with the resource use, and AVG could be smarter about what to scan...

Glad i wasnt the only one who noticed. But yea AVG 8.0 custom or non custom install is much bulkier i switched over to AVAST.

    Avg 7.5 was nice tho..

I noticed that the AVG 8, free version would not always update.
Kept saying it lost connection with the update server.
Ploy to get me to buy it?
It worked. I've had great luck with AVG, so, I took the plunge.
Works like a champ. Saved my neck several times.
To me, it's worth the $$$$

Dunno, I think it interacts more with other programs (other scans in particular), but if you have a fast computer, and use only AVG8 (since it has almost everything), then you probably wouldn't notice.

After I uninstalled it from my Desktop, I was using Super Anti-Spyware with the Clam Anti-Vir (or whatever) enabled. I'd scan various eMule downloads, and never found a problem (were my settings off?). When I took those downloads to my laptop, AVG8 would quarantine about 75% of them (trojans...). a-squared missed them too. One time I took my laptop to the university tech help department for a wireless network thing, and AVG found a virus on their USB flash drive; they were using Symantec Anti-Virus Corporate Edition (latest version at the time)... That's why I'm sticking to AVG for now...

My AVG8-issues returned after I reinstalled it on the older desktop (HP Pavilion 511n, with 1.3Ghz, 512MB RAM (maxed), and Win XP/SP3.)

I decided to uninstall a few programs to free HD space, but as you can see from the attachments AVG8 decided to mirror the process, maxed out CPU and slowed the Adobe Dreamweaver CS3 uninstall process to a crawl - and that's after I had shut it down via the system tray (right click -> exit)!! It's been a few hours already and the progress bar is only halfway through...

Of course I've tried to shut AVG down with Task Manager and other programs (KillProcess, etc.), but it just resurrects itself, and if I come down hard on it, the whole system may freeze...

That said, my 1.8Ghz laptop with 3GB of RAM does not have these AVG8 problems. So yes, for powerful machines it's great. for my desktop, not so great...

My laptop is 1 GHz, clearly slower than yours and I see no slowdowns using AVG 8 but that might be due to two reasons: I have 1GB of RAM and I'm running 2K which doesn't have system restore. When you remove things and system restore is working, an AV and malware detector will watch everything and cause real slowdowns. (Note: I'm not telling you to shut down system restore, just telling you the cause of the slowdown). AVG 8 is both an AV and anti-malware so it is doing two jobs rather than AVG 7.5 which was only an AV.

I didn't have the toolbar installed, but did install the other add-ons. however, I re-installed AVG8 without them, and for the moment it's using significantly fewer resources...

On options, I would recommend people enable the "scan files on close" Resident Shield option, which is off by default. I mentioned earlier that I was using a website grabber program to grab an old message archive. AVG8 picked out quite a few worms (or false positives) from those message files/attachments as the website grabber set them aside (i.e. "on close")... Obviously it'll increase resource use, but for me it's worth it.
