Laptop (Dell Inspiron 8200) w/ 512 MB RAM was running great until I upgraded from AVG Free version 7.5 to 8.5 about 2 weeks ago. EVERYTHING now moving at glacial speed. Used Windows Task Manager, and found that AVG was eating up 80 - 95% of the available CPU !

Suggestions on how to trim it's appetite, or suggestiong on another good but less memory intensive anti-virus program?

PS: Upgrading CPU to 1 GB (the max you can load in this machine), but not sure even THAT is enough...

Did you properly uninstall AVG 7.5 before you installed AVG 8.5? Personally, I don't use AVG (Avast! is what I use and recommend with confidence) and I've heard that if the old version wasn't uninstalled properly, things like your experiencing happen

Used control panel add/remove programs to un-install version 7.5.

Not sure what else to do to make sure it's "all gone"...

Get the removal tool for AVG here: http://www.avg.com/download-tools

Select the appropriate version (32 or 64 bit) for your machine, download it and run it. Reboot at least once.

You can if you wish, re-install AVG 8.5 as "custom". Uncheck the Link Scanner and Toolbar. These two are resource hungry.

I would recommend 1GB upgrade, 512mb is not enough for anything nowadays.

For sure, upgrade to 1GB RAM. And I use and like Avira AntiVir. Lots less resource hungry than AVG.

Also you do a custom install of v 8.5. That way, you uncheck the toolbar and safe search site (no sure if that is the correct wording). That's what is eating up your CPU. If you never download email to your computer, you can also uncheck/untick the email scanner.
