    I have AVG 7.5 and Ad-aware personal SE and they wont take any updates. AVG says that it is up to date when I go to install the updates from their server but it says on the control center that its still out of date. I try to install the definitions from the folder I downloaded them too and it doesnt even see the .bin file.

    Ad-aware says that it has been X number of days since the definitions have been installed even though I do them everyday, it still says this. Any help would be awesome, Thanks.

    If the time and Date on your system is correct then do the below.

    If not set the time & date and check again for updates.

    Time and date is correct then continue on.

    If you do not have other problems.

    All else works. You have no suspicion of Malware or Virus problems.

    No need for exotic trouble shooting here. These programs are free and easy to download and install.

    Then the best thing to do here is in Add/Remove un-install both programs.

    Download and re-install both.

    After un-install and reboot but before re-install do the following.

    Download ATF-Cleaner

    http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/
    when run check select all run twice or more until nothing else found
    ==================================================

    Download CCleaner
    get the slim version http://www.ccleaner.com/download/builds.aspx
    Click bottom right Run Cleaner twice

    then in "left" panel click "Issues" then below click Scan for issues run twice or until no more found
    ==================================================

    Re-install both.

    Since it is possible for Malware or a Virus to try to disable both of these type programs update and run them immediately.

    Report back!

    I wonder about a firewall problem. I would reinstall, but having 2 programs that are failing makes it unlikely a reinstall will help.

    Certain malware can cause your anti-virus and malware to shut down. You can try and update from safe mode, our run our tutorial:

    10-4 Major Sir.

    And thanks for the help yesterday!:)

    The MAN is right hackysackmatt check the exceptions in the firewall and in Windows Defender if you are using it.

    Hello

    I can unfortunately not help you to a greater extent with AVG's software but for our Ad-Aware I suggest you try to perform a manual update of the definitions file as this can in some cases solve problems with the update in the software.

    First check that your firewall (if installed) allow connections from and to Ad-Aware.

    Please also make sure that you got the latest version of Ad-Aware installed on your system (current build 1.06r1). You can find this information by clicking on the “i” icon in Ad-Aware’s main window.

    Delete any definition files in the "c:\Program Files\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware SE" folder. (This file is usually "defs.ref") (the folder name will changed depending on if you have pro / plus / free). There may also be a defs.ref.old, you can safely delete this too. Then try a webupdate.

    Check your "hosts" file. It could be that a malware has changed it so that connections to our update server are not working.
    Your hosts file is located in "c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\". Open the file "hosts" with notepad. If you see any references to "download.lavasoft.de.edgesuite.net", you should remove them. Now try your webupdate again

    If the first 2 methods do not work, then you should try a manual update. Update the definition file by downloading the zipped definition from http://download.lavasoft.com/public/defs.zip Unzip this file and you will get a "defs.ref" file. This file should be copied to "c:\Program Files\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware SE\" (the folder name will changed depending on if you have pro / plus / free)

    Now load Ad-Aware. If the definition file is still showing your old one, then click on the settings icon (the cog wheel), then click "General". At the bottom right, there is a box saying "Using Definition File". Click the "Open file" icon next to that box and then browser to the definition file in "c:\Program Files\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware SE\" (the folder name will changed depending on if you have pro / plus / free) Select it and press open. You should now have the latest version

    Kind regards

    Daniel, Lavasoft
