A tech at Best Buy told me that free antivirus protection or internet security programs did not protect the transmission of credit card numbers, account informatin, etc. when doing on-line banking or paying by credit card on-line. He recommended Trend Micro or some other "full" internet security software.

    Is this true?

There are plenty of perfectly good freeware applications you can use to protect your computer. A salesman will tell you not to use freeware because he does not make commission on freeware. Ask him what is on his computer though and it probably came from this site, for free. ZoneAlarm is a decent freeware firewall, AVG is a good anti-virus program if you keep it updated regularly, Spybot, Ad-Aware, and SpywareBlaster are good spyware/adware protection tools when used together, and of course I would personally recommend using Firefox over Internet Explorer, but that is not completely necessary for good security, just a personal preference. I do banking and such online all the time and have no problems, and I use all of the above mentioned items. Not some overpriced glorified version.

    Hi

Sadly that tech has the wrong end of the stick as its not the job of Antivirus applications to protect the transmission of credit card numbers and bank or online shopping transactions, this is handled by HTTPS and the encryption that these online companies use ( note when using secured transactions that you have a small padlock on your browsers taskbar or address bar ) in 128bit encryption that scrambles up the information your sending and is only decrypted at the other end.

Antivirus and security applications dont deal in this, if they did it would be a security nightmare as you would have a 3rd party company privy to your information!

However what antivirus and security apllication do help with is to keep the many malicious ( malware ) softwares/virii/trojans/keyloggers from invading your PC and stealing this data as you type [ keyloggers ] text and numbers at source before its encrypted and sent, both FREE and Retail antivirus applications can do this well, I do not use Retail software as I see no reason too as the free ones in my case Avast, serves me well, BUT a major part to play in your own personal data security is you, a few tips....

    1. Never leave yourself logged on to a shopping or online bank if you leave your PC, especially one in a public/workplace, logoff.
    2. Keep your Operating System upto date.
    3. Install an Antivirus/Firewall and Antspyware software adn keep them fully upto date.
    4. BE very careful in where you download software, films and music from all that glitters on peer2peer is not gold, you get nothing for free, so that latest film or album that looks inviting to get free may harbour malware.
    5. Always use reputable online retailers, check customer feedback and make sure they have a secure payment webpage ( the padlock ) and the security certificate is current ( click the padlock to check this )
    6. Never reveal passwords and user names to anyone, if you get email that alledges its from your bank or online retailer, suspect it as fake ( Phishing ) and contact your bank to double check, but they will not ask you to clarify your user and passowrd in an email or via the phone.
    7. Use an application like CCleaner to delete your cookies and temporary files on a regular basis, this removes potential areas malware if your infected can search for data.
    8. if using Internet Explorer as your browser, click Tools > Internet Options > Advanced and scroll down the list and tick/check "do not save encripted pages to disk"
    9. Never use simple passwords like a pet or loved ones name, use random mix of characters and upper lower case ie. P4$sW0Rd or even things like 986A&b£h3ll0

    Thanks Halo!

I wondered what the kickback for Best Buy was for these software sales. Last time I bought a computer there, they were pushing Norton.

I appreciate the tips on maintaining security.
