When I start up the firewall reports that the email scanner in the AVG anti-virus program is trying to act as a server, and asks whether I want to allow this. Automatic updates in AVG is disabled.

Is this standard behavior, or some kind of (dangerous) anomaly? Thanks.

It has nothing to do with automatic updates. It simply means that the memory resident scanner catches the mails before the regular client (outlook or whatever you run) can read them and will act as a server on demand once the job is over to give them back to the client.. In case of doubt, try to block the server activity and check out what's happening next : if AVG can't scan the mails, it will be logged in the default folder (maybe you'll be prompted too).

    Hi Doofus,

    1. Try uninstalling AVG first.
    2. Download AVG Free from MG and save it to the HD..do not click Run.
    3. Install AVG from the folder you downloaded it to, choose "Custom Install", unclick the option for "E-Mail scanner", continue installation.
