    Hello all,
A friend brought me his computer with mutable problems so I started with running AVG. When AVG completed it's scan it had found 174 viruses!
Well a window popped up saying that some files had been changed to unrecognizable please insert disk and he clicked it out because he said he did not have the disk. Now on boot up windows are popping up all over the place saying that .DLL's cannot be found.
Can anyone tell me if this can be fixed ?
I have tried system restore and it does not work also windows update wont work aswell as trying to get on line IE7 opens and then within 5 seconds closes.

This is a Dell Demension 4800C
    XP Home

Thanks in advance for any help,

    Dan

Hi Dan, I've not known AVG to rewrite files of delete necessary system files unless the viruses he had wrapped themselves around the system files. If you found 174 with avg I'd go to the malware and do the read and run me first just to make sure they are all gone. You may then have to go to Dell and order a system disk from them specific to your model.

Hang on here a while and someone else will probably have a different take on this.

buggabear is pretty much right on here... malware is known to 'bond' with system files (esp. DLL files) and replace system files with infected versions. When AVG found these infected files, it did away with them. Again, as buggabear suggested, you should follow the steps in this guide. I'm not sure if it will help or if it's even a good idea, but if you quarantined the files with AVG instead of removing them, you should be able to restore the files from quarantine, then go through the steps in the guide to 'properly' clean the system without completely removing infected files. Hopefully, you can just remove the infected parts from within the system files.
    Good luck!

    Hi All,
Thank you for the input but I have tried everything I know (which is not much)
I can't even do the read me run me first things. It just won't let me so I found a Dell disk from an old Dell computer.
    Operating System
    Re installation cd
    XP Home service pack 1

Of course repair did not work so the question is do I need to wipe out the windows folder or the whole HD to reinstall Windows? When I put the disk in to install it said you should not install over the old operating system.

Also will I need a product key?
I don't have one so if thats the case all this is for nothing.

    Thanks in advance,

    Dan

    Hi Dromano,

Did you try looking in quarantined for a restore option, I don't use AVG anymore so not much help here. Also "I found a Dell disk from an old Dell computer" unless a match for OEM I don't think it will work but I could be wrong... never tried it. Yes, you will need a key too I believe. Think your only option is ordering a disk from Dell like Buggabear posted. They only charge shipping and/or free in my case (ordered just for smile factor)
