Anyone know how to temporarily shut off the free AVG antivirus 7.5 program?
Can`t find any info on this in the info section.(unless I missed it).

Can it be shut down without uninstalling?

Having intermittant internet connectivity issues and my service provider mentioned disabling the free Zone Alarm firewall,(which I can do),and the antivirus program so they can run further tests.

How do I turn AVG 7.5 free antivirus off?

(there`s no online support for the free versions just some bs forum)

    Start\Run...
Type in: msconfig then click "Ok"
    Click the "Startup" tab...
Look for item "avgcc" and uncheck it.
    "Apply" then "Ok"
    Let your computer restart.

This will shut down the AVG AV until you say otherwise.
You just shut it back on by reversing the process.

Or right click on the task bar icon in the lower right by the clock and choose Quit AVG control center. It will shut down the main components.

Tried that and it looks like it just shuts down the control center only and the antivirus program is still active.

They should make it easier to shut down.

It's barely active but yes it stays on with very minimum resources. I think all AV programs run in the background so you can turn them back on easily.

Why does the ISP want you to turn it off completely?

Haven't heard of AVG interfering with your ethernet connections ....would be helpful if you could explain the nature of the problem with the connection ....

It`s not the AVG.The problem was still occuring when I didn`t have it.

For the last 3-1/2 weeks or so I have been losing the internet connection,(cable) just about every morning when I start the pc and sometimes while on line.

I cannot sign in to the service.
Then I have to unplug the modem, wait 30 seconds, plug it back in and reboot the pc,and the connection is restored.

The ISP has done tests at their end and everything shows up ok they say because at the time they did their testing I am connected to the internet.

They say if the problem perists, which it has, they need to do further testing and recommend shutting down the firewall and antivirus programs to do this.

Personally I don`t like the idea of this.My pc would be exposed to threats, won`t it?
Or should I not be worried about shutting these two programs down so the ISP can do further tests?

They mentioned intermittant connection issues can be difficult to diagnose.

If only computers could be simple .
