    I am using Windows ME and the "old" AVG Free 7.5. The newer Free AVG 8.5 does not support Windows Millenium (ME) and I don't know what to do! Now I need a new FREE anti-virus program. What works best for Windows ME? I can not afford to buy an AV program at this time. Thanks!

    Clam AV is an on-demand scanner only, not a real-time scanner. The only files it scans are those you right-click on and tell it to.

    "Please note that ClamWin Free Antivirus does not include an on-access real-time scanner. You need to manually scan a file in order to detect a virus or spyware."

    Hi

    Would go with the suggestion made earlier of AVAST Free as its sys requirements are listed for your Windows version.

    @Halo.

    Thanks for pointing that out. On MG it's not mentioned that Avast supports ME, although just found out by going to the author's website. It's support for ME is certainly buried there and not very easy to find.

    Yes I'd vote for Avast rather than ClamWin.

    I agree Avg 8.5 is a good anti virus all round program for windows 2000 upwards but for lower windows versions avast is good, but my advice is to upgrade to windows xp atleast as they is no windows updates anymore.

    Only downside with a upgrade to XP is that not knowing the specs of this WinME PC and if it will run XP better than ME, similar to many that jumped to Vista from XP based PC who found that their PC ran like tortoise in treacle, or if Meekie wants to spend money on a WinXP disk for this PC.

    I agree with you jumping to a more supported OS is preferable but is not always in the users gameplan.

    I would guess that a Win 98/Me PC would have a pretty high level of natural immunity to virii, as the vast majority are designed to infect XP and Vista systems. The OP is probably in the same low risk category enjoyed by Linux users - at present.
