AVG Free issues

I have recently installed AVG Free Edition and when i turned the monitor thingy on i couldnt access my file such as firefox and some other files including msconfig when i tried entering it from run. It kept bringing up pop ups about files on my computer that had viruses but i dont think they do so i had to disable the monitor to be able to access my files...
Can anyone tell me how if i have a virus or is my AVG retarded?
