    Hey guys,

Ive been using AVG Free AV for a while now and I've been quite satisfied with its performance; however, like a week ago I started noticing that the AVG icon in the system task bar turned black and white and required me to restart (after the 2.6 MB update) in order to finish the update. No big deal, I know thats what is supposed to happen, but during this week everyday, if not twice a day sometimes, the black and white icon reappears and I have to restart. I keep on checking for new updates, but AVG always says its up to date...

Thinking it probably hasnt automatically updated correctly, I went to the AVG website but it stated that a manual update is NOT recommended, and I really dont know which update to pick.

I checked for malware but nothing came up with Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool, Ad-Aware SE, Spybot Search & Destroy, Microsoft Windows Defender, CWShredder, Bitdefender and Panda ActiveScan.

Thanks Squeaner... I tried it out but somehow my AVG wouldnt recognize this file as a "new" update so i just uninstalled and reinstalled AVG and things seem to be working perfectly... thank you for the help!

AVG wouldn't update these past few days until today. They may have been having problems.

Had the same problem on one of my machines (I have four on a LAN). I uninstalled it on the affected machine and then re-installed, all is now ok. :)

Although I don't use AVG any more, IIRC when the tray icon is greyed-out, even after a reboot, open the main window & check the settings listing the email scanner, etc. One of them needs to be turned back on; it's a common bug in AVG's settings of the free version. It was, however, fixed in the shareware version.

As I mentioned to Squeaner a few posts back, I just uninstalled and reinstalled AVG and everything went back to normal. It was a weird relief to know it wasnt my PC, but rather an AVG bug.

Hope this thread helped out any of you guys... :D

Have you got AVG installed to your system drive? Not another partition? I found out that the major updates to AVG don't like having to go to another partition. Always had to uninstall/reinstall.

Yeah Hipster Doofus, I have AVG installed to my system drive and not in another partition... good catch though! :D

Mine was/is installed on the system drive. I did note that the new installation did install an updated core version though. All is fine with my systems now. :)
