AVG free version

Is there a FREE free version of the 8.0? By that I mean not the 30 day trial one, a real free version like the ones they used to have.

Yeah... got it.. I was going directly through Grisoft... no listing that I could readily see there.

Mmmkkay.. downloaded it but it won't install after extraction : says that I'm trying to install it on a Windows operating system that doesn't support all the functions required for their operation.
I have Windows XP Pro.

if it won't install, try the uninstall first (it is part of the install routine).
and if you had any other AV product installed, follow the links in this post

to be sure that you have completely removed it.

Sounds like your system does not have SP2 or higher installed. This is needed for AVG Free version 8
