AVG new

Hi,
I've been getting a popup telling me that starting in January, my AVG free is going to be replaced by version 7.5 which will no longer be only antivirus but will also have anti-spam and anti-spyware options and maybe also a firewall (can't remember). I've watched several companies (Symantec and Zone Alarm) go this route with pretty bad consequences. Has anyone had a chance to preview what's coming or have any opinion about it? I'm considering switching to Avast.

I am using their paid version of the suite that you mentioned, AVG Internet Security and really like it. I find it not heavy on resources and it seems to do the job quite well. I do like the fact that I don't have to be concerned about the updates of several programs, just this one. I think if they bring out a free version of this combination it will be a good one.

Then of course I have several other spyware on demand scanners that I use to compliment the AVG suite.

I know that my opinion is maybe not the one that is popular with all, but I do like it and it does the job for me. I find the price reasonable and the help when I need it quite good and rapide.

You misunderstood the message. While there is an AVG 7.5 Security Suite that bundles their AV, anti-spyware, and firewall together in one package (which is not free), the paid AV, anti-spyware and firewall are each available separately, and there is also AVG 7.5 Free AV, and AVG 7.5 Anti-Spyware Free (formerly Ewido). It's just another update, basically.

 

I downloaded and installed it with no bad consequences that I can see. New same as old, with slightly different graphics. I'll let you know if I see anything.

 

In the popup it's not listed as being several different pieces of software.

 

I will read it again. It didn't seem to say they were all different pieces of software. It simply said mine was going to run out.

Version 7.1 will run out in Jan. 2007 and be replaced with 7.5 Free Edition. Just another update.

You would have to PAY to get the security suite. 7.5 is a souped up version of 7.1 BUT is not the suite with the extra features you have been mentioning.
