AVG or Anti-Vir?

Which one is better? I've tried AVG and like it, but Anti-Vir seems pretty popular. Opinions?

    I use both.

I plan to only use one. AntiVir was updated today and I've never used it, just looking for comparisons.

I've used more than one A/V program on my systems for years without problems.
Sometimes one proggie will get something another doesn't.
I don't allow any of them to run in background.
I'm carefull about my downloading, scan a file manually if I suspect there could be trouble and do a full system scan each time I update my A/V programs. That is done immediately after they release new data bases.

    Happy trails,

Thanks for the help guys. I appreciate it.

Edit: I just ran AntiVir on a P.C. that I did a clean 2000 install only a week ago and it found this:
    C:\WINNT\system32\ActiveScan
    imscan.dll
[DETECTION] Contains signature of the VBS script virus VBS/Newlove.A
    WAS DELETED!

The newlove virus. I have some research to do now. Not bad for a free antivirus program.

Ppl like what they use, even more if they have paid for it ;)

An alternative to using 2 full installs could be DAILYSCAN http://vil.nai.com/vil/virus-4d.asp make a little batch file, put it in "send to" or use it in download manager if it supports AV check of file. Extra test allways nice and it does not conflict with anything. Only commandline but it will do. I only use a simple batchfile that will close if no problem and halt if anything is suspicious. Think it used tons of errorlevels so I probably get wrong halts sometimes. Have been looking for a batchfile that covers all errorlevels so result gave meaningful information but not found it yet.

Ive seen many running more than 1 AV but I dont think you can gurantee it will work. 2 shields at same time should be sure disaster but even if you dont use that there are activity, files loaded. AVG and Anti-VIr might be ok but what about Anti-Vir and Avast! or Anti-Vir and Mcafee etc.

I like Avast and AVG (defs for both are updated often), didn't like AntiVir.

I recently re-visited Avast and I like the changes that were made ..they did a good job on the features. Though I don't like that I have to reboot for program updates (not def's).

Regarding your points #1, #2 and #3, please reread the third line of the post you replied to.

What does corporate have for home users that the home version doesn't?

That and knowing that you can't buy a corporate version with a single license, and knowing the price is close to 500 bucks... ;) I'll say no more.

I can't find anything that Corp will do that the home version will not.

The corp version at work blows. We see viruses leak through all the time, the clients randomly disable the protection and its a general mess.

Partly at fault are the network operations people, but I have a feeling part of it is Symantec's general crappiness.

I remember when Welchia hit the net.

Even though we had "supposed" up to date definitions, I watched NAV find and detect welchia, then allow it to install.

"...however this isn't a private message forum and when I respond I do so as informative as possible so those who are reading these post fully understand my recommendation. "

Then don't quote me then proceed to misrepresent mine by ignoring what I said. We are both correct in what we stated. Lets leave it at that please.

Hey there, Fleabus, Welcome to Major Geeks! :)

I don't think xflat ignored you, and you guys are both saying very informative stuff. I am glad to learn about how you run the virus scanners at different times, and I also found xflats information very enlightening.

Anyway, I had never heard of using more than one virus scanner, only heard it was bad to do so, and I myself DID misunderstand that you didn't run them both in the background, so I'm glad that all got clarified.

I, for one, learned something, so kudos to both of you!! :D

    just my $.02

I have used Norton AV, Zone Alarm Firewall and Spybot S&D for years for my computer protection and NEVER had a problem, including downloading over 2000 items from Kazaa
It really amazes me that people will spend $1000 or $2000 for a computer but will not spend $50. for antivirus or take a few minutes to download AV software. whichever software you choose will probably be a good choice!

Reviews rate the free version of AVG just as high, and even higher than paid AV solutions. I have been using avg over NAV for 6 months now. I will never switch back. I will however be purchasing the full version of AVG.

I was just looking at resources that Avast uses.. 20+MB!!, no thank you.. can't afford that on this machine with only 384MB. BALETED... reinstalled AVG.
