   I recently installed AVG free edition.I have seen a fair amount of dispute on the net as to if it is a good anti-virus program or not and if Avast is better.Just wondered what people here thought?

   Both programs are good. You would find that people like both of them but I would say there is a slight preference towards AVG. It updates more frequently and has a few less issues with false positives with other scanning tools. Avast detects things from Panda as malware. But in some regards it really Panda's problem for not encrypting their signatures.) Also AVG is releasing other free tools like:
