AVG Problem, Error 1009

Woke up yesterday morning to the gray and black AVG icon in the system tray. I connected to the internet and attempted to download the update. Instead I got a message that the update failed. So, I tried to uninstall and install the new version 7.5. When I tried to uninstall, I got this message: Local machine: installation failed
Initialization:
Error: Checking of state of the item registry key HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run (current user) failed.
The configuration registry database is corrupt. (1009)

What is going on? Why can't I uninstall AVG?

My OS is Windows ME and my internet connection is dial-up.

I ran Spybot Search and Destroy - clean and Ad-Aware - clean.

When I finish using the internet, most of the time I clean with:
CCleaner, SmartProtector Pro, Internet Explorer Options, and Clean Up and then I reboot.

Please let me know if you need any more info and TIA.

If you have a registry cleaner with a "find in registry" tool, search for all AVG and Grisoft entries and delete them If you are using the AVG spyware be careful of what you delete.
