I posted a thread in malware support forum for a slow computer. I have got rid of all the malware and my computer is still a little slow. The malware forum said Norton was slowing it down. So I unistalled Norton and installed AVG AntiVirus Free Edition off MajorGeeks.com. I'm not sure if I did something wrong, but after it was loaded I tried to run a scan and it would say it still scanning but nothing was changing. I let it run for over 10 hours and it would never finish. So I uninstalled AVG and tried Avira AntiVir Personal - Free Antivirus, downloaded from MajorGeeks.com. And the same thing happened. Sorry I'm not a MajorGeek and I am dumb when it comes to computers! If anyone has some advice for me that would be great because I am lost. Thank You in advance!

I have Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition Version 2002 with Service Pack 3 and Windows Internet Explorer 7.

I left Avira Antivirus on my computer until I hear back from someone.

have you tried scanning in safe mode? you should also empty the prefetch folder in C:/Windows and delete all files in any TEMP folder including Temporary Internet Files and dodgy looking applications in the Downloaded Program Files (again in C:/Windows) or just Right Click your C: drive and run a Disk Cleanup then try a defrag :)

How did you uninstall Norton"s? If done through Add/Remove Programs, you may want to use the Norton Removal Tool http://www.majorgeeks.com/Norton_Removal_Tool_SymNRT_d4749.html because more often than not there are remnants left and may conflict with other antivirus software. Be sure to reboot once or twice after using the tool.

Are you sure there are no remnants left of AVG? If in doubt, get the removal tool here: http://www.avg.com/download-tools Reboot after use.

I don't know what the instructions are for Avira. You may have to remove it and re-install.

Now download CCleaner here: http://www.majorgeeks.com/CCleaner_Slim_No_Yahoo_Toolbar_English_d4191.html analyze and delete scanner and use the registry cleaner. Make sure to make a backup of the latter.

Hope the above helps. If not, perhaps someone else can assist you.

I did use the Norton Removal tool to remove it. I also used the link you gave me to remove all the remnants for AVG. I'm going to uninstall Avira and reinstall AVG! But I have 2 folders on my desktop that I think are part of Norton, but I am not sure! I dont know if I should remove them. They are a yellow folder and underneath it has NSWBE07100 and the other one has NSWBE08110. If anyone knows anything about these folders let me what to do. Thanks agains for all your help!

    Thank You,
    Mike
