I just downloaded free avg and looked at its site and it read I have 29 days of free use, or something like that. What do I need to do, Want the free ware that I downloaded?

The free version is just that, free. You do not have to pay for it. The 'pro' or paid up version you do have to pay for. I believe the AVG offer you a trial period for the paid up version, and this what you are referring to.

You probably do not want the paid version, or even the take up the offer of it for a trial period. Just have the free version.

Even when you have downloaded and installed the free version you get a button at the bottom right that is orange (on AVG 2014) inviting to try for 30 days..etc. Perhaps this is what you are describing. This button is present on the free version and you do not have to pay for that; you just have to put up with the button. If have already downloaded and installed: Either you have inadvertedly clicked this, or you accidentally chose the option when you originally installed AVG. I believe it is easy to download the wrong version.

If you have downloaded and installed already, I don't know what the best thing to do is. But as long haven't given them any means of taking money off you (like your CC number) the worst that can happen is that you are denied access (to the paid) version, or it will stop working, when your 30 day trial is up. You will probably be invited to pay up at the end of the trial period.

If you have already handed over your CC number, then probably AVG will automatically bill you at the end of your trial period, and not explicitly tell you or warn you. In this case, action is required to end your trial period and escape payment before the trial period ends, if you do not want the paid up version. Be careful that this does not happen - it is easy to forget if the default is to pay (if it is).

In either case I recommend that you contact AVG support if it is easy and tell them what you want to do, unless you plan to evaluate the paid version over the next 29 days or so. (unless you downloaded just the free version, in which case you're ok)

You should, as Laura says, take care where you download from, and take care also to untick auto-ticked boxes that you do not want (such as agreeing to installation of 'free' additional software and toolbars) or boxes that default to you paying when you do not want to. You usually have to agree to a license agreement for downloaded software. This is normal. If you read the agreement and object to it, you can abort the download with no consequences. It won't let you proceed unless you agree to the terms of the license agreement.
