avg update

I recently got a Trojan and AVGFree recognised it and v.vaulted it, then several days later I heard something running in the background, and it didn't stop until I emptied my deleted emails box. I have had a slew of the various nigerian scam emails recently and I always block the senders, but hadn't emptied the deleted mail for a few days so I had quite a few of them in the box. now AVGFree cannot connect to the internet and won't update the email scanner. please tell me I don't have to remove it and download it again, it takes 4-6 hours, even with stardownloader. I'll do it if I have to, but it's a pain. I need to shift over to clearwire but we're a little delayed with that at the moment.

Windows XP
IE 7....though it keeps saying it's 6, I have all the "new" bells and whistles of 7 and that's what I downloaded
not certain whether package 1 or 2....
Compaq computer abt 4 years old

 

What was the name of the trojan?
