I just received a notice from AVG that says the AVG 7.5 will no longer be updated or available after May 31. Says I need to upgrad to 8.0. That's ok, but when I choose to update says the program now costs $$54.99 plus s/h! So do I now have to pay for AVG? I might consider it because I like the program but price seems to be little steep, but then I haven't priced them around cuz I used free ones :-D

So are there any recommendations as to a new free virus scanner? I have seen others on mg but wanted to know if anyone else has anything they like...

AVG still has a free program for non commercial users.

Obviously AVG would rather you pay them for their product, so they make the link for their free version considerably smaller and easier to miss than their paid version.

AVG 7.5 is supported till End December. The upgrade is buggy, AVG forums are inundated with probs after the upgrade!! Even MG has given thought to removing it as an recommended free AV.

    You're welcome.
Don't feel like the Lone Ranger.
I missed the proper link when I went to update AVG as well.
Went back and found it in small type at the bottom of the page. :-D

I installed it on 3 computers at my home and 6 at my church.
I've had no problems with it.

    Kestrel -
Did you use AVG and have problems or did you just change?

    Joel -
I downloaded the exe file but haven't acutally upgraded. Noticed you said you didn't have problems so that is a good thing. I trying to decide whether to upgrade or switch.

I haven't used Avast, because I have never experienced a problem with AVG.
I know that many here at MG do prefer Avast.
I've been reading over at the AVG free forum and I don't see anything there that would suggest that they have been "inundated" with problems.
All new programs have "settling in" pains.

I suggest you see for yourself what others are saying by visiting the link

    Also visit Avast's forum

I installed AVG 8.0 on 5/2/08, after receiving a notice from them that support for AVG 7.5 would end May 31. Obviously, they later rescinded that policy and extend support to Dec. 31.

Anyway, I've had no problems. And, I was pleased when I noticed my system performing better with AVG 8.0 than with 7.5. For example, MS Office 2003 applications launch faster now.

One minor issue arose but was easily resolved. See http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?p=1154057

Oh, by the way, the Yahoo toolbar can be unselected; it need not be installed.

I appreciate the link. When I did a search on MG to see if someone had posted about AVG it pulled up no threads. Have read the information and thought maybe if AVG 7.5 is being updated and supported until December I will wait a little longer to install it.

And Joel - thank you too for the links. I'm headed over there to read the info and see what is there.

Always appreciate this forum and come here first for info ;)

I have taken a look at the AVG forum and it sounds like regular bugs when new stuff comes out. At least to me doesn't appear to be a huge mistake. Wondering if load new release does it do the same thing as spybot and ad-aware? Can I stop using these two and just use AVG then?

I haven't taken a look at avast yet but will. I loaded this on my mother in laws computer a while back cause she is still running Win 98 (YIKES!!) and it was the only free virus scanner out there that would run this OS. I'm a creature of habit and not sure I can get use to the interface but would consider it.

AVG does have a spyware scanner. I use it.
It is also free, but after an initial "trial" period you have to update it manually or buy their premium version.
I believe it does everything that spybot and adaware do, but I am not certain that this is true.

The catch is that they will be discontinuing this free service.

It is being replaced by a product called "Internet Security" that carries a $55/year price tag.

    Oh well

I just rechecked and found they do have a new version of their anti-spyware program.
    http://www.grisoft.com/ww.product-avg-anti-virus
It still isn't free ($35/ year) but it is less than their deluxe Internet Protection software.
The most major difference between these two programs is the "Protection" version includes a firewall.
A word of caution here: it is inadvisable to have more than one firewall active on your computer at a time.
They tend to get in each other's way and use exorbitant amounts of CPU time.

I had AVG free anti-spyware separately when I used the AVG free anti-virus 7.5. When I installed the new AVG free anti-virus version 8, it removed the AVG anti-spyware software automatically from my computer.

By the looks of it I guess that the 2 free AVG software programs have been combined into 1.

    That's odd.
I upgraded to 8.0 over a month ago and my AVGS is still working fine.
In fact I have it running right now. Downloaded an update as per normal.
    :confused

While installing the AVG version 8 software, I got a warning that the AVG anti-spyware would be removed and it did so automatically. To be sure, I checked it out on the Add/Remove programs and it was gone.

What I'm using is the free version of course!
